It's amazing to me how many people toss things out based on the "suggested" dates to generate more money for the product owner vs. minimizing waste and use

Reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose... being mindful of those means planning ahead when I shop. For me, this most often means buying from stores that have bulk bins (WinCo for the win!) and bringing my own reusable containers, which are in fact repurposed takeout containers. 

Knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates means not mindlessly discarding food because you assume it is no longer safe to eat. The bottom line - less food waste!

I would rather spend $1,500 on a vacation than on food that ends up being thrown out.
