Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

What I've noticed is that I haven't taken any of the daily walks I planned this month. It's been a busy period and I just haven't prioritized it. But I can always turn over a new leaf in May! :)

What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

What inspires me? A desire to conserve natural resources for future generations and the fact that we have only one earth to call home and we should be good stewards of it. I think many of the problems we face in terms of environmental damage are due to business leaders and governments being too short-sighted and thinking in terms of their quarterly earnings or re-election cycles rather than what's best for society at large. I get that businesses need to be profitable to continue operations, but when CEOs are being paid ~300 times as much as their employees, and then avoiding paying taxes on that income, it's not hard to see that things are skewed. I'm glad President Biden is leading on climate and I hope we can make some real progress in the coming years. So in short I'm inspired by a sense of responsibility and a bit of outrage.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Anita Roberts's avatar

Lots of reasons come to mind: Ease of access, marketing, tradition, convenience. Western culture is very disconnected from the sources of our food. The science on the benefits and risks of eating meat seems to conflict, from what I've read, but it's clear that the environmental impact of cattle-produced methane is a real problem.  Biodigesters seem to be a way to help address that. I remember reading about how rain forests are being cleared to make room for more cattle, as if we don't have enough. That just seems crazy to me.

Thanks Bill! I will check out that website. I usually end up just making dishes up as I go along based on what's on sale or what looks good when I go shopping (on the rare occasion that I go into the store these days). I really enjoy the vegetarian dishes. It's giving up the dairy (especially cheese) that's hard for me.

I did read just today in my SnoPUD (local utility) newsletter that they will begin managing a biodigester out in Monroe (a little bit east of where I live) that will produce enough energy to power about 600 homes. I thought that was pretty cool. Is it weird that I love my PUD?

Thanks for sharing Anita.  Certainly how I was brought up -  meat, potatoes, and corn - anything else was “gross”. A bit about my journey of cutting out meat since then...Jennies been vegetarian for a long time now and she’s found the Cookie and Kate website where she finds most if not all of the vegetarian recipes there and they’re terrific! I truly don’t miss it - the flavor in veggie dishes beats meat every time - in my mouth anyway. Turkey and chicken are the last two meat sources I’ll cut at some point - mainly have these when I’m out and about and need a quick bite.

Do the customers you service have Science Based Targets set in their corporate strategy? Are you comfortable asking? Why or why not?

I will be better able to answer this question later this year when I'm more involved with direct client service, but I think I would be comfortable asking.

In the meantime, I'm thinking it might be good to if DNV were to collaborate with climatetrace.org in some manner (if we aren't already doing so).

Wanted to share a link to "Lightning Talks: Otters" presented by the Seattle Aquarium on the topic of how Sea Otters may help to mitigate some impacts of climate change. Fascinating talk! Lightning Talks: Otters - YouTube  A key takeaway is that where sea otters are present, kelp forests thrive, and kelp is an important source of carbon storage.

Happy Earth Day, friends! I hope you're all enjoying the EcoChallenge so far. I've been doing lots of research trying to figure out what to plant in my yard this spring. With Arbor Day coming up next Friday I'm on the hunt for a couple of trees that will do well in acidic soil. It's so hard to narrow down the options!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

I try to avoid food waste by planning meals ahead of time and sticking to a list when I shop so that I just buy what I need to make the planned menu for the week. The approach is good for my bottom line but it doesn't allow for much spontaneity.

But to answer the question, if I had an extra $1500 sitting around it would undoubtedly go into my home improvement fund. I'm saving to build a laundry room so I can get my washer and dryer out of the garage. :)

I have started doing online shopping that is delivered to my house during the last year and that is a way to eliminate those impulse buys that I run into at the store. The trade off is someone still burns fuel to deliver my groceries, although the store does have delivery people deliver up to five clients during each time out. Good luck with your laundry area!!!

I second that; the weeks where I follow a plan for most of the week certainly leads to less waste, less sweets and on top of that I am able to use some of the ingredients in two or more meals. Highly effective.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Anita Roberts's avatar
    Anita Roberts 4/07/2021 4:07 PM
The obvious answer here is fewer calories consumed which, in theory, if done consistently, should lead to a healthy weight (paired with a bit of exercise) and in the long run fewer health risks and associated costs.

A suggestion could be to volunteer to walk a dog in the neighborhood e.g. once per day a 1-3 days per week ;-) Our "to be guide-dog for a blind person" turned out to have arthritis in on leg and we were able to keep her; we have not walked/moved as much in years and on a regular basis during all kind of weather; rain, shine, snow, fog :-)

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Anita Roberts's avatar
    Anita Roberts 4/03/2021 7:34 AM
One of the actions I chose this year was mindful eating because it dovetails with some things I'm already doing to change my relationship with food so this reinforces what I'm trying to do.

I have been a stress eater for as long as I can remember and that has resulted in over-eating, which led to weight gain and the whole cycle of over-eating, feeling guilty about it, and then consoling myself with food in response to that guilt. I finally reached a tipping point where that pattern was no longer acceptable to me.

For the last few months, I've been making a conscious effort to slow down and really savor the food I eat, to only eat when I'm physically hungry (not in response to emotional or environmental triggers), and to make more conscious choices about what I eat. I've been far from perfect at this but I feel like I'm learning about what triggers me and it's enabling me to make better, healthier, and more eco-friendly choices.  So now, when I start to feel the urge to eat, I'm pausing and questioning whether I'm truly hungry or if what I really need is to hydrate, or call a friend to vent, or go for a walk, or something else. This practice is helping me appreciate what I eat more and is helping me build more sustainable eating habits.
