The April 2021 ecochallenge has been a great journey; thanks for reaching out to all DNV colleagues Bill :-)  In addition to looking after my "spring" garden, which also includes 2 bee-hotels and 2 bird-cages (one is home to a blue-tit couple these days), I have also enjoyed learning/reading about expiration dates, Science Based Targets, and family planning and being able to scroll to numerous topics related to the ecochallenge. Have a great weekend and enjoy the last day of the challenge. I have been impressed and inspired by team members varied activities - well done every one!

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Knowing the difference between the Use by, Sell by and Best by dates makes me feel more comfortable when assessing the likely quality and usability of the food/product. Some very good practical advise found in the related articles as well.

Despite the continuing cold weather - snowed again yesterday (photo from my home-office window) - and limited garden activities, the ecochallenge is making me pay attention to a lot more articles and news-briefs, which highlight how people make a difference for the environment and "sustainability goals".  Encouraging and inspiring :-)

Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

Was prompted to add & read more on this topic based on the fact that my local newspaper posted on article on a fairly newly established organization called "Family Empowerment Media". A local, Norwegian girl - 22 years - has together with some friends/contacts from the UK and Nigeria started a news channel and non-profit organization  in Nigeria to improve family planning there and try to remove myths related to use of contraceptives. Through two radio stations, they have been reaching more than 3 million listeners in areas where there are currently were limited focus on how important this topic is for girls/women. If girls/women are able to take/complete education, look after their health and have a certain level of income it increases their chances of being able to see their children grow-up and not be malnourished significantly. Important topic, with significant potential for great future impacts on our planet.

    Industry Science Based Targets
Do the customers you service have Science Based Targets set in their corporate strategy? Are you comfortable asking? Why or why not?

In my role in Group, serving mostly internal customers, these questions would naturally be asked to DNV as an organization. Though the goals and lighthouse projects as described in the newly posted DNV Strategy 2025 (DMSG-0-7) are fairly specific, the more detailed and "science based targets" in have not yet been released as the KPIs for Q4 2020 are still the latest update on the relevant intranet page: Organization DNV GL KPI Dashboard Q4 2020 (pleas see last two pages of the ppt). Expect the new targets to be more aligned with "science based targets", but it will be a good idea to review carefully as soon as released. It would not be uncomfortable/difficult to ask e.g. CFO and CT&DO about further details and views if we find it appropriate.

FYI Decided to pose the question on SBT in our internal Yammer channel under the "DNV Sustainability" section.

Hi Bill, I noticed that one of the large energy transition companies in Denmark has the following SBT - do you think it would be an idea to reach out to Sverre Alvik, who is responsible for ETO at DNV to see if he or someone else could push DNV towards similar / tailored commitment?

Would be great to see our company listed here - Companies taking action - Science Based Targets along with the wind turbine suppliers and customers we support. I see Vestas and SGRE are there. I wonder of all of our top 150 customers - who are already listed.

After a couple of nice "above Zero C days", in Norway, during which it was possible to get started preparing our small garden in a more eco friendly way for insects, birds and humans to enjoy, I am back to "desk-top planning" ;-) and an iced over veranda.

When visiting with a native Brazilian family outside Manaus in the early 1990-es I was surprised and saddened to find rain-forest cut down to make space for a poorly attended banana plantation. I signed up for support/schooling for one child in South-America when returning to France and have not missed one monthly payment during these soon to be 30 years independent of which country I have since worked and lived in.
