Judy's actions
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 60 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Industry
Choose Recycled Paper
Recycled Paper
I will plan ahead to only use paper products made from post-consumer recycled paper for my home or office.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Restore Wetlands
Coastal Wetland Restoration
I will volunteer 3 hours with a wetland restoration project in my region.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Give a Microloan
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will give 3 microloan(s) to women who need help starting a business.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 500 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Contact your Elected Officials
Abandoned Farmland Restoration
I will contact 4 elected officials to voice my opinion on the importance of restoring farmland in my region, including both public and private land.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Judy McComb 4/12/2021 3:05 PMI continuously marvel at nature and every day in the garden allows me to see something new, whether animals, bugs, fungi, or plants. I don't have a traditional vegetable garden. Instead, I have a perennial garden in my front yard (removed the grass there about 10 years ago) and back yard. So, my vegetables go in to my perennial beds because all plants are beautiful and I think having plant diversity leads to a healthier garden. When visitors walk through they are always shocked to find eggplant or tomatoes growing next to coneflowers or canna. It is fun to find good places for whatever I want to grow. Then, when I harvest, there are always other plants growing in the area so you really can't notice. And, certain food plants are really lovely, such as swiss chard and artichokes, that sometimes I harvest some and leave the rest to grow because it is beautiful.-
Judy McComb 4/16/2021 5:39 AMI am a later in life gardener - I never knew it could be so fun or relaxing. I am convinced that if I can grow a lovely garden, anyone can do the same! Plants want to grow and as long as you give them a bit of compost and water from time to time they are actually pretty forgiving.
I will snap a few photos this weekend to share. -
Anita Roberts 4/15/2021 5:49 PMI'm a wannabe gardener. But your description is inspiring. I would love to have a set-up like yours. If only I had a green thumb. -
Bill Berger 4/14/2021 9:15 PMSounds amazing! Have a picture or two to share? My partner and I have tossed around the idea of having less grass and more garden but are usually put off by the time commitment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Judy McComb 4/07/2021 12:18 PMToday at lunch I planted two fig trees, two peach trees, and one plum tree. I live in the middle of the woods, but I have enough sun scattered throughout one side of the property that I think I should end up with good crops once the trees mature. I also have blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries growing in this same area and i look forward to those harvests each year.-
Anita Roberts 4/07/2021 4:09 PMThat's great, Judy! I'm planning to plant some trees toward the end of the month to replace some trees I recently had removed from my backyard. I just have to figure out what kinds of trees I want to plant.

Judy McComb 4/06/2021 7:03 AMIt's in the 70s and 80s here in North Carolina, so I spent the last 3 days getting my gardens prepped for summer. I have all of my seedlings ready to go out at the right time. And, I already have lots of greens, peas, and beets growing nicely. I hope summer comes soon for you, Kari!
