It felt really good planting some trees in my backyard! Theyre still just saplings, but nature really helps balance my mental and spiritual health. I love sitting out there, just meditating, relaxing, and enjoying my time. Knowing that I’ve helped new things grow just feels good.

A locality that fundamentally practices recycling, reuse, and conservation.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

Land and energy waste motivates me to change my behavior. These are just little things that can be changed to make a big impact. I can now fertilize my garden with things that would’ve been thrown away or disregarded anyways, so it makes the best of both worlds!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Alex Huber 4/26/2021 6:18 PM
Most of the time, my transportation is based on money and convenience. I have my own car and a job, so it's easy to pay for those services, and it's convenient for me to use since I own it. I would love to have an electric car, but it's typically more expensive, and as a college student as well, I can only afford to work part-time. If I had more time on my hands to afford more climate-friendly options I would most definitely do so.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Alex Huber's avatar
    Alex Huber 4/21/2021 8:08 PM
The nearest climate-friendly supermarket to my house is about a 20-minute drive away. It would be great to show support for this particular supermarket and hope that the others surrounding the area would catch on as well! It would be great for all of them to make more environmentally friendly changes in hopes for a better future

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Alex Huber's avatar
    Alex Huber 4/21/2021 8:03 PM
My diet is impacting deforestation in a lot of ways, yet not as much as I thought it would be. I drink a lot of coffee and consume a lot of chocolate and eggs, but I don't really eat meat or dairy all that often. A big contributor to deforestation is soy and coffee, which a majority of the soy is fed to animals, but many working adults cannot go a day without a cup of coffee, myself included. I'd love to slow down my coffee intake and increase my water intake instead, which would both help my caffeine addiction and the environment. I'd love to also go fully vegetarian, as I only eat chicken at the moment, and know that there are plenty of great alternatives! Eating the soy directly as tofu is a great way to slow down deforestation, as you need less farm land to just grow soy and eat it directly rather than grow soy to feed to animals and then eat the animals.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Nutrient Management
How does environmental quality influence your sense of community?

It feels good knowing that the local farmers are using safe ways to farm and ensure the crops are properly taken care of. I like knowing that the people in my area are doing the best they can to support the local environment. I like supporting my local community farmers knowing how close they are grown and how they are ethically sourced! They were very happy to see 'young folk' coming to their stands and knowing that we also want to support their mission!

What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

    Alex Huber's avatar
    Alex Huber 4/17/2021 7:37 PM
What inspires me most to act on sustainable energy is the fact that we only have one mother earth and we need to treat her the best way we can because there is only one mother earth. We need to try and keep the doomsday clock ticking because soon there will be no time to turn back before the damage is unstoppable and not reversible. Sustainable energy is very important to consider because it's much cleaner than fossil fuels and keeps the world going round a little longer!
