I love the outdoors and fishing. I live near the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, a great resource and fishery. It is a shame what our actions will do to things like that.

Joe Walter 4/30/2021 4:04 PMLast day of this challenge. Had to get some last minute points in there!! I hope everyone enjoyed it and learned something new. I know I did. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Local Perennial BiomassClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Joe Walter 4/30/2021 4:02 PMI agree with the statement. Climate change is going to effect us, humanity, and our ability to live on this planet. The planet itself will be ok if/when we extinguish ourselves. Physically it will still be there, maybe altered but still there. Billions of years of change, I don't think we will damage it too much. But we will make it uninhabitable for us perhaps! George Carlin said it best in the 90s on one of his comedy routines: "we are like a bad case of fleas".
I love the outdoors and fishing. I live near the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, a great resource and fishery. It is a shame what our actions will do to things like that.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Advocate For More Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Joe Walter 4/30/2021 3:57 PMPlastics I think concern me the most. When I think about the "floating islands" of plastics out in our oceans I shudder. Human pollution is a huge issue both socially and environmentally. I know carbon is a large concern as well, but pollution bothers me more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Joe Walter 4/30/2021 3:54 PMI have heard about biomass before, but did not know a lot about it. Surprising to learn about the use of feedcrops for fuel and other things. I will be doing more research on this and other topics. Work was extremely busy for me these last couple months, and I did not put in as much "EcoChallenge Time" as I would have liked. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Joe Walter 4/30/2021 3:53 PMMy wife and I do a garden, not huge as we live in a development but it is nice size. In season we also shop at a farmers market or 2 nearby to support local farmers for things we do not grow in our garden. I am inspired both by dependable fresh food (that I know where it comes from and what goes into it!) as well as supporting local farmers and businesses. I have been trying more and more recently to "shop local" rather than the big chain or corporate stores. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Joe Walter 4/30/2021 3:50 PMI have patronized several women owned businesses in my area. One is a distillery owned by a woman who is also a veteran of our U.S. military.
Researching women-owned and minority-owned businesses can be done to help support these entrepreneurs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Joe Walter 4/14/2021 4:50 AMMy wife was extremely successful in using portion control to lose weight 3 years ago. It has been a while and she has kept the weight off. We do not go to a gym, work out, and we don't really exercise enough either!! But it goes to show you how crucial food and eating habits are to weight loss. I need to work more to take a chapter from her book! I could stand to lose about 15 lbs, and portion control more could make that happen. So there is health benefit as well as limiting food waste. -
Joe Walter 4/05/2021 9:06 AMI am excited to learn some new things here with some of the newer challenge categories. I do a garden, practice eco habits, etc. Interested to learn more about some of the eco land conservation topics I signed up for. -
