Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

I bought myself a scooter that gives me 85 miles/gallon. It has ample storage and now for simple errands abd shopping or going to the post office or local bank or to my work out, I don't need to drive my SUV all the time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Planning each week out makes this easier.

I am shocked to learn that school cafeterias are a major source of waste. My daughters tell me that kids spend a lot of time talking and playing games and then just toss their food. This includes UNOPENED items as well, that could easily be collected in a separate bin and sent to the food bank!

Frankly kids are not to blame - because parents need to inculcate this habit at home to begin with - EDUCATE THE PARENTS!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

Using the portion control I don’t have to waste any food.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

Nailed it!  This is easier than I thought!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

Living in apartments I feel like our landlords could participate in programs of sustainability.  I will chat with them when I see them next.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Sherry Taylor's avatar
    Sherry Taylor 4/07/2021 6:34 PM
I can be an advocate of geothermal energy.
