Save Rigaud Mountain

Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Muscle Power on Earth Day
Did you have any obstacles getting to and from campus with your "muscle transportation" of choice?

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/30/2021 7:34 PM
I didn't have any reason to be on campus on the 29th but I biked to campus earlier this week and my only 'obstacle' was how out of practice I was! I hadn't been out biking in a long time so it took a little while to get used to the motion of it again:)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/30/2021 7:30 PM
This is a really big question! I think what concerns me most is that there's irrefutable science showing that the status quo clearly isn't working out too well for the environment and yet so many people are still reluctant to change their behaviours and mindsets (both on an individual level and a societal one).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/29/2021 4:44 PM
Plastics have a pretty big carbon footprint and though I'm not sure if it would be considered a material or not, so does hard cheese! The GHG produced by the cows needed to produce 1kg of cheese is about the same amount as a car travelling for 6 km.  A lot of clothing materials, such as polyester, also have quite a large footprint! All in all, to find out more I think we just need to do a bit of research when we're thinking of buying things, be it groceries, clothing or other stuff. For example, a 2 minute google search would show you that soft cheese has a much lower footprint that hard cheese!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/29/2021 4:34 PM
I learnt that refrigerants have a much more detrimental impact on the environment than I thought! I knew they weren't good but watching the video with the talking polar bear made me realize how big of a role they play in global warming. Supermarkets contribute to this negative impact by continuing to use synthetic refrigerants. Looking at the climate impact of the different chain supermarkets in the US, I was saddened to see that a lot of them aren't even trying to phase them out :(

Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/28/2021 4:56 PM
When I was younger, I went to visit my grandparents who lived in the Eastern Townships. They had a little house on top of a tall hill. One morning, while the sun was rising, I went out in their front lawn which was covered in wildflowers and tall grasses with my grandmother and just started running around and rolling down the hill and when I stopped at the bottom there was this beautiful butterfly that landed on my arm and I just remember thinking that the world is so incredibly beautiful! That was one of the first times I think I fully grasped how wonderful nature truly is.

      Melissa Tomecz 4/28/2021 5:19 PM
I always feel that sense of "awe" when I am near running water (or the beach) and mountains.  I also LOVE the smell of pines in the forest!  My favourite places where I connected the most to nature was in South Carolina and Iceland :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/27/2021 8:23 AM
I could try to be more mindful of my consumption! This ties in quite well with reducing and refusing. Being more conscious of what I buy (food, clothing, etc.), where I buy it from and why I feel like I need it is one of the first steps to changing my behaviours. I feel like overall I don't consume many unnecessary things; I rarely get new clothes and when I do I buy them second-hand, I try to plan my meals in advance so I can reduce the amount of waste produced, and I only buy other things on occasion, but there's always more I can do! I have mixed feelings considering implementing these "R's". On the one hand, I feel hopeful when thinking about everything I can do to reduce my environmental impact, but on the other hand, it's a bit discouraging knowing that no matter how many individual actions I do, It'll barely do anything in the big picture if corporations keep polluting on the level they currently are.

    • Melissa Tomecz's avatar
      Melissa Tomecz 4/27/2021 1:19 PM
That is why we have to change corporations' minds.  You sending a letter to tell them you refuse to buy their product any longer, unless they change their packaging is a nice start, but one person won't change a company's mind---a petition just might do it, though!  The more people on board forcing companies to change their production, the less money they make--which can change their tune.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/21/2021 9:09 PM
I had heard of it before but I didn't know much about it! I personally believe that the biggest advantage of silvopasture is its potential for wildlife habitat and forest restoration!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Sofia McVetty's avatar
    Sofia McVetty 4/21/2021 9:04 PM
I've noticed how different things look every day, especially this time of year! Every time I go outside there's new life. Even just the other day I noticed my neighbour's wildflowers had started blooming and their birdhouse was receiving any more visitors than before! I've really enjoyed taking the time to disconnect from my screens and take the time to connect with nature. In terms of infrastructure, I think that having separate walking and bike paths on busier streets would make me feel a lot safer while on my walks!

Some pictures from my walk today:) The weather was so lovely and I was lucky enough to find a bunch of different types of mushrooms! I ended up reading in the woods on a mossy tree stump for an hour and it was so calming.
