Emily's actions
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 15 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Land Sinks
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.
Land Sinks
Learn about Temperate Forests
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the environmental services provided by and the environmental issues affecting temperate forests.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Communicate With My Elected Officials
Onshore Wind Turbines, Offshore Wind Turbines
I will write or call 1 elected official(s) telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.
Land Sinks
Advocate for Forest Protection
Forest Protection
I will contact 3 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and the enforcement of existing anti-logging laws, as well as the rights of local people to protect and restore the land in their communities.
Buildings
Learn about the Legacy of Redlining
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about the legacy of redlining and how city planning and environmental justice issues are interconnected.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Emily Katzin 4/29/2021 11:00 AMCity planning and design can impact environmental and human health through placement (whether communities are near highways, or whether busy road are routed through communities), and amenities that impact walkability (are there sidewalks, parks, etc.), green space (impacts heat) and more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Emily Katzin 4/19/2021 1:29 PMI have enjoyed seeing many species of birds on my daily walks. One feature that is highly used in my neighborhood is a series of tree-lined sidewalks that cut through the middle three consecutive streets. I would like to see more of these. One improvement would be more houses that turn their front yards into gardens. This beautifies the area, draws more wildlife, and reduces noise and environmental pollution from lawn mowing/care. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Emily Katzin 4/08/2021 1:24 PMI walked with my family at the Metroparks Lakefront Reservation (Dike 14) and it was so cool to see red-breasted merganser pairs diving for fish all around the lake. We also saw a loon. I had never seen these birds before and didn't know they could be found locally. It made me appreciate the lake more and all the wildlife that benefits from it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Emily Katzin 4/01/2021 9:57 AMI was very disappointed to learn that I could not recycle plastic takeout, clamshell, berry, or produce containers through my residential recycling program. We use a lot of these items and it can be difficult to buy berries without some sort of plastic bag or container. When we get takeout, we have been asking restaurants to omit items we don't need from our orders (utensils, napkins, sauces, etc.) to reduce waste. I prefer to refuse waste when possible, but have been getting frustrated at how difficult the recycling "R" has become for waste I can't refuse! -
Emily Katzin 3/26/2021 12:24 PMI am excited to learn and make an impact with everyone on our team. Thank you for joining and committing to take action for the planet during the month of April!-
Jacquelin Fielding 3/27/2021 7:29 AMHi Emily - I tried to create my own action to work on but could not get this to work?
