I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Beach Cleanup
Southern California has some of the world's most famous beaches. However, due to tourism and poor waste management, many beaches have plastic, Styrofoam, and synthetic refuse scattered across the sands, which end up in the oceans and will inevitably affect sea life. The goal is to pick up what trash you see and dispose of it properly (i.e. recycle plastics/glasses in the correct bin, etc) every time you are at the beach .

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Alanna Abel 4/28/2021 10:58 AMThe dilemma is that with additions of green infrastructures in historically impoverished neighborhoods, housing prices go up causing residents to move away. This is a serious problem that very much affects Los Angeles (i.e. Venice, Westchester, Playa Del Rey, etc etc). I think the cities/counties need to be very strict about landlords and developers increasing prices. I think there should be a subsidy to offset improvements but rents must stay down to avoid gentrification. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Alanna Abel 4/27/2021 11:19 AMI like sourcing local produce because they don't have to travel far expending unsustainable fuels. They usually also taste better because they were picked when ready, not before, like most exported produce is, to keep for its journey. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Alanna Abel 4/26/2021 9:18 AMI have recently learned more about farming and wild caught fishing practices. Unfortunately, it seems that even "sustainable" practices are quite destructive to ecosystems and populations. I have decided to avoid purchasing fish and try to eat only line caught fish that I can assure was not mass fished.-
Nikki Vandivort 4/29/2021 9:49 PMIf you don't mind trying something new, I worked in my Operations & Supply Chain class with a vegan seafood company called Sophie's Choice. They have everything from vegan crab cakes, to shrimp, to "toona"!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Fix Leaky FaucetsWhat are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?
Alanna Abel 4/26/2021 9:15 AMShorter showers, mindful washing, and energy efficient appliances are some ways that I try to reduce my water usage. I also typically take "old" water that has been sitting in a glass or in my dog's bowl for a couple days and use it for plant waterings! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Alanna Abel 4/23/2021 11:33 AMI thought that I was being so conscientious about palm oils when I purchase products but there is an enormous list of alternative names that companies use. I found this resource that will help me better navigate my product choices.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Alanna Abel 4/21/2021 12:19 PMYes! What I found interesting about the presentation was how plastics have greater gas permeability so foods will spoil quicker. I typically use glass containers with few exceptions but knowing this will inspire me to invest in metal containers as well! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Alanna Abel 4/21/2021 9:27 AMI have taken to the Marie Kondo way in the past few years which has really sharpened my appreciation for minimalism. Not only has it kept me more organized but it has increased my repurposing! Old t-shirts=rags. Empty boxes=drawer compartments. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Alanna Abel 4/20/2021 11:08 AMMy biggest concern is that we are shortsighted in our consumption of small conveniences. Landfill waste is such a problem, as it promotes more unsustainable plastic production, fills wide swathes of land and ocean, harms ecosystems, and leeches toxic materials into the soils. Bioplastics aren't a foolproof solution, but they do reduce emissions and degrade faster than other mono/polymer plastics. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Find a Local Climate-Friendly SupermarketHow close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?
Alanna Abel 4/15/2021 9:47 AMSurprisingly, there are not many supermarkets that are HFC-free on the Westside! I will do most of shopping at those that do, and encourage my nearer markets to consider making the change for the environment! -
Alanna Abel 4/06/2021 11:34 AMMy partner and I watched Seaspiracy last night and have pledged to eat plant-based seafood products going forward! Here are some companies that I found in case you too love seafood and wish to reduce/eliminate fish consumption: https://vegnews.com/2021/4/vegan-seafood-seaspiracy
