SWCA San Diego Feed

BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I have not done a good job of noting daily actions, but I have been a conscientious human and consumer this month, as well as other months. I really do try, and actually "do" as well!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

There cannot be sustainability without balance, each requires the other. Balance is in the definition of sustainability basically, because a healthy balance of mind, body, and those put into action, makes for a sustained mind and body which will flow outward to those around you, as well as inward.

Got some time outside hiking on the Irvine project that's for sure.  Ran into an owl, rattle snake, gopher snake, and a roadrunner.  Lots of beautiful native flowers blooming too!  Made it up a nice size hill.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Smaller portions are best for my mostly sedentary position while working. I tend to have less energy if I eat too much at one sitting as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

A high meat diet can be harsh on the body to digest. All these high protein diets are not good for the planet due to all the farming involved, nor is it any good for our kidneys. That kind of diet can be harmful in the long run due to elevated protein levels affecting the kidneys, as well as the heart.

People think having a steak everyday is the idea meal but yet in the States we have a high amount of heart disease.

I have noticed a lot of trash on my daily walks actually. I bring a bag to pick up trash along the way. A new crosswalk on a main road near my neighborhood has made crossing that street much easier and safer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

I slow down and taste my food, plus make less of a mess.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Soup or stew or making a broth are some great ways to do so!
