Switch your Search Engine
Ecosia is a search engine with servers that run on 200% renewable energy, plants a tree for every ~45 searches made, and does not sell your data to 3rd parties. See ecosia.org for more information and how to set your search engine default to Ecosia
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 6 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Transportation
Improve the MPG on my existing car.
Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:
Transportation
Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG
By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.

Heather Unger 4/21/2021 9:02 AMI really enjoyed Bobby Gill's TEDx talk: It's Not the Cow It's the How. To paraphrase: There is a lot of focus on solar and EVs, which are absolutely part of the solution. But we need to go beyond decarbonizing - we need to recarbonize our soils - and it doesn't require expensive technology, just holistic thinking. Frederick S. Moses 4/21/2021 7:35 PMYou are spot on this, decarbonizing the soils is critical. We have the technology, and the green premium to do this is very affordable. -

Heather Unger 4/04/2021 7:43 PMLook what the Easter Bunny brought :). Looking forward to filling out the keepsake edition questions with my soon-to-be-5-year-old (who coincidentally turns 5 just before Earth Day).-
Heather Unger 4/05/2021 6:27 AMThanks, I'll add it to the list! I got him this book for Christmas: Creek Critters | Stroud Water Research Center (stroudcenter.org), which was written by a local water research center. My husband works for PA Dept. of Env. Protection as an aquatic biologist so very relevant. -
Josh Gipper 4/05/2021 6:21 AMI can't recommend enough Creekfinding. It apparently all went down near where I grew up in Iowa. My 7 year old is also an avid fisherman.

Heather Unger 4/02/2021 10:49 AMActually, WSP USA is carbon neutral (for our Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 business travel emissions) so we already offset everyone's business travel emissions! -
Meghan Jones 4/02/2021 9:00 AMThat's cool! I wonder if we could get an option to add a carbon offset to the reservation.
