Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG
By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 5:11 PMI just posted this in response to a different question, but equal participation in conversation is a barrier. People (not just men) often assume that my husband is THE decision-maker when it comes to things like home-buying, hardware purchases, contractors, finances, etc. In reality, we make decisions together. This false assumption cuts women out of lots of important decisions and leadership roles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Connect With A NonprofitWhat are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 5:07 PMSafety is always a pressing issue. In addition, I notice in my community that men automatically talk to each other rather than to women, especially with regard to financial transactions and property decisions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve the MPG on my existing car. What do you think of this added credit?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 4:34 PMI appreciate the tips on improving the MPG on my existing car! I had no idea that an air filter could affect efficiency. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Express My Support For Walkable CitiesHow could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 4:30 PMMy city already has pretty great walking infrastructure. However, I have noticed one area that really needs an ADA curb ramp, and a railroad on the north side of town (formerly redlined area) that lacks a safe pedestrian crossing in the neighborhoods. You literally have to walk through grass and over the tracks to get to the sidewalk on the other side. Fixing these issues would make these areas more equitable, accessible, and enjoyable for all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Express My Support For Equitable Biking InfrastructureWhat do you like most about biking in your city? What would you like to improve?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 4:28 PMI like that I can get almost anywhere on a bike! I would like for the route between my house and the grocery store to be more direct. Right now it involves winding through some neighborhoods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 4:01 PMIf I am interpreting this question correctly, I imagine something like my choice of toilet paper would be an example! Impacts are low here, but creating the paper requires tearing down trees in a far away place. Fortunately, several folks have recommended bamboo toilet paper, which I'm excited to try! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Contact your Elected OfficialsDo you have any personal connections to a farm or farmland? If so, what are they? What feelings are evoked for you when thinking about declining farmland?
Meghan Jones 4/30/2021 3:39 PMI feel peace when surrounded by farmland. By contrast, I'm not a fan of new residential developments that absorb the fields and turn them into paved labyrinths of cookie-cutter houses. I would much rather see a sunrise over a cornfield. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Advocate for High-Speed RailWhat are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?
Meghan Jones 4/28/2021 8:46 PMSafety is a big one for me! I choose not to bike or walk if conditions are dark, foggy, icy, unprotected, or otherwise creepy.
Another factor that has arisen during the pandemic is the ability to transport purchased items. I can't figure out how to carry a pizza home on my bike! :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Explore Other Food, Agriculture, and Land Use SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Meghan Jones 4/28/2021 8:22 PMI learned about the water footprint of dairy alternatives. Almond milk has a relatively high water footprint, so we are switching to oat milk!
