Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG

By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

Improve the MPG on my existing car.

Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:

Transportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

Fuel cost savings, governmental financial incentives, but I think I would emotionally and mentally feel better about driving an electric vehicle.

This is a little bit of a confessional post...  My boyfriend and I got into a disagreement the other day while taking a walk.  He rides his bike year-round and has been thinking about getting rid of his car altogether.  He asked me what it would take for me to also drive less.  Instead of rising to the challenge and considering his question seriously, I found myself getting defensive and saying cavalier things to deflect.  He moved on to how we should eat less meat and again, I felt a bit attacked (since I do all the cooking) and defensive instead of talking seriously how we might make changes.  I knew I was on the wrong side of the argument, but started digging in my heels talking about what I wasn't willing to do or even consider.

I apologized the next day and said that my reaction was wrong and that we should revisit his ideas for making changes in what we're doing, but it got me thinking.  Here I am, someone who supposedly wants to makes changes that would be better for our environment and my own body, but when really challenged to make *meaningful* changes (vs. doing some research or watching a video), I balked.  If I'm reacting in that way, how do we think we can reach people who value their personal freedoms more than the environment or don't believe in climate change at all?

Great question! As a marketing professional, I often lean towards making the "business case." Lots of eco-friendly alternatives also save money. Perhaps that is an angle that we could try?

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Linn Stanley's avatar

When I stay inside my home, office and car all day, I don't appreciate what's around me.  But when I smell the flowering trees, hear the birds chirping, and feel pine needles underfoot, it gives me a feeling of peace, connection and responsibility to make sure those things never go away for good.

Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Linn Stanley's avatar

The South Platte River runs through Denver and large swaths of the waterfront areas are undeveloped and/or polluted.  There are multiple stretches where homeless people have tents and other temporary shelters set up.  I've often wondered why these areas haven't been restored and developed as they could be quite lovely, but never thought about what would happen to those people if the areas suddenly became more desirable.  But I don't think that should be a reason to NOT restore these areas either.  I definitely need to think more about what would be equitable, but also climate-friendly in our approach.

This is a great point. And two separate challenges. waterfront can be developed for the environment and business. But the homeless, that is different all together as we all know and a complex issue. I'd be interested in hearing your ideas. We have a big homeless area in Downtown Houston as well as in Austin.

What did you learn on your green roof tour?

I wasn't able to find a video for my own city of Denver (besides one that described the Green Roof initiative that passed several years ago), but did find this great one in NYC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXffC4W1kD0).  Al, the FIT Facilities guy, talks about the many benefits -- birds, insects, building insulation, reduced storm water run-off.  This list goes on and on.

Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

For over 10 years, my family has been using Kiva.org to make microloans. I typically make loans to groups of women pooling resources to make an impact in their community, usually farming collectives.  Check out Kiva.org!

Because of this challenge, I discovered there's a nonprofit, not 5 minutes away from my house, Comal Heritage Food Incubator, that trains immigrant and refugee women to start their own businesses in the food industry. I learned about how they've been helping women and immigrants during the pandemic and made a donation.  I'm so glad I got connected with them!  Thank you!
