  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

I've been composting for years, I really think this should be listed as a daily action as opposed to a one time. But what motivates me? Landfills. Filled with material that can compost beautifully in your yard and generate amazing compost, like the litter from my pet rabbit. Also, solid waste professionals have to deal with such an intense volume, if we all composted more it would make their lives easier as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

There is a LIDL missing from the map, so actually within 5 miles. After reading the materials I feel like I need to learn a lot more about what the best approach is. It wasn't entirely clear to me if the expected savings in global warming included the any global warming from switching to the other options - something that already messed us up once, in the original switch to HFCs!

Hi All, I missed the first several days of the challenge due to being out of internet range, but I'm ready now! Looking forward to learning with you all this month and I hope we can all really interact during the challenge, I know it will help me keep on the path.

Meanwhile, does anyone know this plant? Found near wetland/small creek in VA between the Rappahannock and the Potomac.

Hi Kate, thanks for posting this to your feed. I showed the picture to Cindy Lincoln, one of our experts at the museum. She's the coordinator of the Naturalist Center and has a Ph.D. in botany. Cindy believes it's  Eastern Skunk cabbage.

you can still track things you did on the days you missed.  I forgot to log 2 walks and 1 bike ride and I think you still get points.  As far as the plant goes, I can't help there but if you have the iNaturalist app or go to the INaturalist website and upload the picture, people out there in the community that see it can help identify it and other things in nature.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Kate Davison's avatar
    Kate Davison 4/05/2021 3:41 PM
Ok, I'm going to ignore this question (sorry!) but its not about individual decisions. Large decisions are at play here. Many food banks toss food based on these labels, either because of genuine concern over safety, considerations of optics, or actual rules of their organization. Banning these labels, which were clearly conceived to get us to buy more, would be great, but I'm pleased to read that there at least is a push for 'best by' as a replacement.

Further actions to take: find out the rules at local food banks, including El Buen Pastor and Interfaith Food Shuttle, and make sure food waste isn't happening there because of this issue.

Article recommendations - the solar fridges in Africa! Also the ethylene tracking sensors.

Concerns - there are real issues with eating old food. Spoilage aside, the food is less nutritious and plain less delicious.
