Nancy Locquet Absillis
"As much as I like to explore and enjoy nature, I feel the responsibility to take care of our environment and hope I can convince others to do the same. I intend to make changes to my daily life that will have a positive impact on my community and intend to solidify these changes and make them part of my routine so they will have a lasting effect."

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting with black soldier grubs
Learn about NC's native Diptera that has one of the widest digestive enzyme profiles, allowing for digestion of virtually all human food waste in one to two days: pre-and post-consumer; cooked, raw, or spoiled. Sign up for this workshop and discuss with your team members:
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Park Clean-up
I will pick up any trash that's left in the park on my daily walk. My goal is to leave the park a better place and to minimize the trash footprint in the park. I choose this action because I noticed empty cans and fishing lines when I walked my dogs, which can cause harm to wildlife such as the Blue Heron that frequently visits the pond in that park.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
Engineered Sinks
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching how people can build with carbon-storing materials - including agricultural byproducts - and discuss it with my peers in person or by posting to social media.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 3 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Land Sinks
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 20 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/30/2021 3:00 PMThis has been such a great experience for our family and even though this is the last day of this competition, earth month will not end here. We felt supported by all our colleagues and their families, our Teen ambassadors, and our volunteers throughout this competition and we are committed to continuing learning and practicing ways to protect our environment and our natural resources. Congrats Team...we did it!! Now we keep moving forward!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/30/2021 2:48 PMI was surprised what kind of an impact eating meat had on our environment. Overall I have been trying to eat less red meat but this challenge really questioned the menu of our entire day. We have tried some vegetarian dishes and really like some of them (zucchini parmesan was our favorite!). It's too early to tell how it affects our bodies, but we've definitively changed our eating habits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/29/2021 8:46 AMIt's not a new compost bin, but I re-instated one that stopped working over the winter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Support a Community GardenWhat are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/29/2021 8:44 AMBy doing a quick search for community gardens near me, I stumbled upon a great community garden that offers volunteer opportunities, workshops, and a weekly "Tug box" filled with locally grown fruits and vegetables that can be picked up! Just found a gem near me!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Hang Laundry Outside to DryDid you see anything in nature while you were hanging your laundry?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/26/2021 12:52 PMBecause of allergy reasons, I can't dry our laundry outside, but we have a laundry line above our bathtub, which works perfectly fine...so no wildlife to report :-) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/26/2021 12:49 PMI have been investing in reusable bags and glass containers and have noticed that my recycling bin not as full as it used to be. I'm currently looking at creating bioplastics with agar agar, seaweed, cornstarch, and other starchy products as part of a summer camp activity. Just out of curiosity, I've added these bioplastics to my compost and worm bin to see if it would disappear...I'll know more in a few weeks... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste ProductsHow feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/23/2021 12:10 PMI was amazed that rice straw could be used to make moisture-resistant MDF material that can be used indoors. Dealing with this by-product used to create all kinds of environmental problems, but now, it can provide MDF of consistent quality. Bamboo and hemp have a lot of potentials as well! I just read that the bricks in the Great Wall of China are held together by sticky rice mortar :-o! Nature provides so many eco-friendly alternatives to build! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/10/2021 9:49 AMYears ago I went through my pile of junk mail and opted for paperless mail. It took some time, but it's worth it. I do realize that as of late, the junk mail is finding its way back into my mailbox, so I've decided to do this exercise again. I also use printed paper as scrap paper and shed it to add to my compost and vermicompost pile. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/09/2021 11:53 AMSo... I thought this would be an easy challenge since we usually have our dinner as a family and talk about what the day was like. The problem is breakfast. I seem to grab my phone mindlessly and start looking at the news, emails, and social media while eating breakfast. At least I manage to eat 2 meals a day in peace :-) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 4/05/2021 5:32 AMLast year, when the pandemic hit, we starter our daily walks in the woods behind us and discovered new plants and animals along the way. It's amazing how things change in only 1 year! Today we saw Mayapple near our creek and raccoon tracks, something we hadn't noticed last year! I'm thinking of keeping a picture log of that area, just to see how things change yearly and even within a year.
