QUESTION
Buildings
How do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for smart ones will positively impact your life?
We will be able to maintain a comfortable temperature in the most efficient way possible. Half of our house is also a short-term rental unit so is not occupied all of the time. With a smart thermostat, we can better manage the temperature when guests do arrive even when we are away from home.
Turns out my brother has also done some experimenting with biochar in his RED gardens project. Check out his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZlJSo8RNAY. If you are interested in growing food he has a ton of information on his RED Gardens youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq9U-gJ1LtDCE4W5BhEDFSQ
I heat my home with an oil furnace. To have that heat pouring out of low insulation spots is bonkers. In our case insulating the trouble spots is not difficult. We improve our carbon footprint, save money, and our toes will no longer freeze in the kitchen.
Has anyone done the Online Energy Audit action? I thought there would be a tool like the Footprint calculator suggested in the "Learn More" but there isn't. I can't seem to find a good one for the area. Does anyone have any suggestions?
By making extra effort to ensure that the process in inclusive. Identifying what the barriers to participation are (time, knowledge, language, learning differences, income, childcare, transportation, access to information...) and making efforts to lessen these.
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Interesting that this is a potential bridge solution to help us wean off of fossil fuels while other technology (energy storage etc) develops further. I am a little wary of the amount of resources that might be invested in developing biomass tehnology/industry. Will this divert attention from longer term solutions. Although I appreciate the use of waste products and I wonder if we can use invasive species such as phragmites.
What did everyone put for this question of the footprint calculator? Most of my electricity would come from hydroelectric which I guess is considered renewable, except for my oil furnace. So what do you all think is 75% renewable a fair answer. Or does anyone know a simple way to figure this out more accurately?
Hey Amy. According to the Canada Energy Regulator...In 2018, about 96% of electricity in Ontario is produced from zero-carbon emitting sources: 60% from nuclear, 26% from hydroelectricity, 7% from wind, and 2% from solar. The remainder is primarily from natural gas, with some biomass.
