Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 60 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 14 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Land Sinks
Advocate for Forest Protection
Forest Protection
I will contact 3 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and the enforcement of existing anti-logging laws, as well as the rights of local people to protect and restore the land in their communities.
Land Sinks
plawking for a greener outside space
"plawking" is the trend that brings together walking and litter picking.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 240 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 14 minute(s) learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 14 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Buildings
Online Energy Audit
Multiple Solutions
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 14 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Buildings
Replace Manual Thermostats
Smart Thermostats
I will replace manual thermostats with smart ones.
Buildings
Plan to Insulate
Insulation
I will find out how to make my home more energy efficient through better insulation and weatherization.
Industry
Research Cement Alternatives
Alternative Cement
I will spend at least 14 minutes researching cement alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 14 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Earth Month Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Electricity
Solar Water Consultation
Solar Hot Water
I will contact a local installer/distributor to see if a solar water heater makes sense for my house.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Replace Manual ThermostatsHow do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for smart ones will positively impact your life?
Amy Darrell 4/29/2021 7:04 PMWe will be able to maintain a comfortable temperature in the most efficient way possible. Half of our house is also a short-term rental unit so is not occupied all of the time. With a smart thermostat, we can better manage the temperature when guests do arrive even when we are away from home. -
Amy Darrell 4/26/2021 7:15 AMTurns out my brother has also done some experimenting with biochar in his RED gardens project. Check out his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZlJSo8RNAY. If you are interested in growing food he has a ton of information on his RED Gardens youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq9U-gJ1LtDCE4W5BhEDFSQ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Amy Darrell 4/26/2021 7:12 AM- Improvement of soil fertility
- increase of crop yields
- better water retention and drainage
- reduction of soil acidity
- absorption of soil pollutants
- increase in plant disease resistance

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Plan to InsulateWhat are some of the benefits of making your home more energy efficient?
Amy Darrell 4/22/2021 6:08 AMI heat my home with an oil furnace. To have that heat pouring out of low insulation spots is bonkers. In our case insulating the trouble spots is not difficult. We improve our carbon footprint, save money, and our toes will no longer freeze in the kitchen. -
Amy Darrell 4/22/2021 5:59 AMHappy Earth Day everyone! Even though I know you all celebrate Earth Day every day. -
Amy Darrell 4/13/2021 7:03 AMHas anyone done the Online Energy Audit action? I thought there would be a tool like the Footprint calculator suggested in the "Learn More" but there isn't. I can't seem to find a good one for the area. Does anyone have any suggestions?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Amy Darrell 4/09/2021 11:14 AMBy making extra effort to ensure that the process in inclusive. Identifying what the barriers to participation are (time, knowledge, language, learning differences, income, childcare, transportation, access to information...) and making efforts to lessen these. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Amy Darrell 4/07/2021 6:08 AMInteresting that this is a potential bridge solution to help us wean off of fossil fuels while other technology (energy storage etc) develops further. I am a little wary of the amount of resources that might be invested in developing biomass tehnology/industry. Will this divert attention from longer term solutions. Although I appreciate the use of waste products and I wonder if we can use invasive species such as phragmites.

Amy Darrell 4/05/2021 6:44 AMWhat did everyone put for this question of the footprint calculator? Most of my electricity would come from hydroelectric which I guess is considered renewable, except for my oil furnace. So what do you all think is 75% renewable a fair answer. Or does anyone know a simple way to figure this out more accurately?-
Lucrezia Chiappetta 4/05/2021 10:54 AMHey Amy. According to the Canada Energy Regulator...In 2018, about 96% of electricity in Ontario is produced from zero-carbon emitting sources: 60% from nuclear, 26% from hydroelectricity, 7% from wind, and 2% from solar. The remainder is primarily from natural gas, with some biomass.
