  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Nikita Bangera's avatar
    Nikita Bangera 4/27/2021 11:28 AM
My vision for a sustainable community is based on a show on Netflix called "The Good Place" where the afterlife is a place free of climate crises, inequality, racism, and every bad thing that happens on Earth. One where everyone is mindful of their impact on the environment, may it be their behavior towards their surroundings or the people around them. But sadly, it seems out of reach.

Health and Education Connect With A Nonprofit
What are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?

    Nikita Bangera's avatar
    Nikita Bangera 4/27/2021 11:14 AM
Female infanticide, domestic violence, acid attacks, rape, harassment, dowry, lack of education, control of property, insufficient access to sanitation facilities are just some of the issues faced by women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

For a Russian History class, one of my assignments was to make 'Borscht' which is a kind of soup (2019). It can include any and all vegetables of your liking. And the recipe that my Professor had provided incorporated using the entire vegetable.

    Electricity Calculate My Carbon Footprint
What stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?

    Nikita Bangera's avatar
    Nikita Bangera 4/27/2021 10:54 AM
What stood out to me the most was the amount of CO2 emissions due to the number of flights I take every year. But the pandemic has changed that. I'll try to take fewer flights.

Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Nikita Bangera's avatar

The worst part is that of the 3 million deities from Hinduism many are female goddesses. In fact, it is believed that every female child represents goddess Lakshmi who is the goddess of purity and wealth (only for female children, there is no equivalent thing for male children). The goddess of knowledge, wisdom, music and arts is also a female named "Saraswati". Yet female infanticide, crime against women, inequality is still prevalent in our society. In India, there are a lot of social barriers that affect women's equal participation and/or representation. Lack of education, traditional gender roles, gender-based stereotypes, societal norms, are just some of the barriers that hinders equality.

Thanks for sharing Adrien! I can imagine the horror you felt when the bible study group discussed that.. I am an agnostic but I grew up in a country where religion is considered a huge part of people's life. The thing I struggle with is how almost all religions in the world ultimately teach you to 'be good' and 'do good', yet somehow so many people tend to do questionable things in the name of religion. Perhaps it says more about the perception of religion rather than religion itself.

Thank you for written about this Nikita, sometimes it is not easy to discuss how our cultural beliefs & religious beliefs my not align with reality. Or how sometimes these beliefs are used as justifications for limiting the rights of others, which contradicts the overall values. I think back to my freshman year when I naively agreed to meet with someone about joining a bible study group on campus. I was raised in the United Church and my dad is a minister, so christianity has been a part of my life. However, the United Church and how I relate to christianity is very different from what the person I met with discussed. I was shocked and somewhat horrified that they openly discussed how being gay is a sin on our first meeting. This directly contradicts my experiences in the United Church and what I learned from my father and our ministers in the community.

The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world’s people generate 40% of the world’s waste. We toss out 2 billion plastic razors, 1.5 million tons of paper towels, and 12 billion disposable diapers annually. How do you reduce your waste?

To produce Sunday newspapers each week, 500,000 trees are cut down. Recycling a single Sunday edition of the New York Times would save 75,000 trees. We could save about 250,000,000 trees each year if all of our newspapers were recycled! Do you recycle your newspapers?
