  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings Install A Toilet Tank Bank
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Maggie Tracey's avatar
    Maggie Tracey 4/29/2021 11:40 PM
Taking steps like the "toilet tank bank" (for which I recycled a plastic water bottle full of water), and switching to other "low-flow" options are a way for every one of us to take water conservation steps. I am also converting my flower beds to more hearty regionally native plants that do not require extra watering, and doing the same with my lawn, allowing clover, plaintain, and creeping charlie to grow where it wants as they stay thick and green even when rain is scarce - much more so than grass which gets dry and brown throughout the summer.

It breaks my heart to see the damage humans have done to the natural world and I feel a deep responsibility to do what I can to improve the situation.

I had heard the term but didn't know what it meant and have now watched several great YouTube videos explaining the technology, how it's created and how it is used, like this one:

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Maggie Tracey's avatar
    Maggie Tracey 4/28/2021 8:28 PM
Money and time are often factors in deciding a method of transportation, but also the distance that I need to travel. If I'm going to Vegas for a long weekend, driving is not an option as it would take far too long. When the distance is short and time is less of a factor, greener options make more sense. I walk as much as possible to neighborhood places, and would take public transit (train) into the city versus driving (pre-Covid, that is).

Agreed. I do as much as I can on foot. Long distance travel I favor train, but I'm fortunate to be able to afford the PTO and the extra comfort costs. For travel in the area (suburbs) trips that should take an hour round trip can take the better part of the day. Better public transportation would be a boon in outer metro areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
How feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?

    Maggie Tracey's avatar
    Maggie Tracey 4/28/2021 8:13 PM
I think it will become more feasible as green innovation continues to ramp up and improve and manufacturing/construction companies are open to adapting to new materials.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Maggie Tracey's avatar
    Maggie Tracey 4/28/2021 8:04 PM
I feel satisfaction watching something grow from a tiny seed or small plant into a full sized tree. Extra bonus pleasure if the tree flowers in the spring or has a particularly beautiful color in the fall.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Maggie Tracey's avatar
    Maggie Tracey 4/28/2021 7:51 PM
Transportation tends to be something people associate with a significant carbon footprint, but there is a hidden carbon cost to transporting the things we eat and use - not just moving people from place to place. For instance, fruits and vegetables and fish can travel halfway around the world incurring their own massive carbon footprint before they land on our plates...whitefish from Iceland, mangoes from the Philippines...etc.
