Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG
By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.
Transportation
Improve the MPG on my existing car.
Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 8:07 PMI just bought a carbon offset for a round trip journey between Atlanta, GA and Santiago, CHI; and it cost me less than 10% of the airfare price; it's basically just a tax to offset the carbon emissions of your entire journey; they should just mandate these purchases for every single flight; why am I just learning about this now? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Switch your Search EngineWill you make this your default search engine?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 8:02 PMyes; and if I really need to use Google, I can use Blackle, the search engine just like Google but totally black so it reduces the amount of energy needed to brighten up the screen; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:58 PMcan i invest in geothermal energy; yes, yes, yes; it seems like such a simple, win-win solution; reliable, abundant, and efficient; why is this not more popular, let's make it happen; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:53 PMat first, I didn't think I produced enough food waste to start composting, mainly because all my life I always made sure to eat my entire plate of food; but this eco challenge (and another action specifically) had me tracking the amount of food i waste when preparing meals everyday, and it has made me realize that I do indeed produce food waste than can be diverted into a compost; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:51 PMi have heard of biomass before, but I didn't realize it encompassed so much more than what I thought; would love to be turning my own manure into useful, renewable energy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Microgeneration in Low Income CountriesHow can micro energy solutions reduce inequities? Why is this important to you?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:33 PMI donated to a non-profit organization that is dedicated to expanding self-sufficient electrical grid systems in my home island of Puerto Rico; after Hurricane Maria destroyed the island's electrical system, it became very apparent very quickly that relying on foreign oil and natural gas deliveries were not sustainably, neither environmentally nor financially; harnessing the natural power of the sun on a tropical island to power smaller communities to rely less on foreign fossil fuels, this hits home and is important to me; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:25 PMI eat a lot of fish, mostly purchased from the same frozen brand from the grocery store I frequent near my home; normally when I buy frozen fish fillets, I always spice it up and buy a new/different one that previously, so I've gone through many different types; I went ahead and researched each individual fish species I've bought through this website, and I now know which fish species from my area were harvested more sustainably; I have since dropped a couple of species off of my shopping list, and will purchase more of the "best choice" fish species per seafoodwatch; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:22 PMthis is the first time I have every heard of biochar, why isn't it more common or readily available? it seems to me like a simple win-win, you can remove wastes from your environment while also creating both energy for your daily activities as well as a useful fertilizer for your needs; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste ProductsHow feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 7:12 PMI believe it can be very feasible to build with agricultural waste products: for one, as a waste product, it should ideally be very easy and cheap for producers to source; so long as we understand the strengths and weaknesses of such products, let's maximize their use as much as possible; maybe we don't need to be building skyscrapers out of hemp, but if we can simply start building new single-family homes or new subdivisions with hempcrete or other agricultural products, that's already a big step in the right direction; -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Richard Sinz Lopez 4/30/2021 6:48 PMgovernment. the best way to ensure that climate action plans are undertaken in an equitable and socially just fashion is to ensure that there is an established framework backed by local, state, and federal governments; government policies can have profound and meaningful impact in areas like gentrification, which have been proven time and time before to be exacerbated by free market tendencies;
