  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Launch a Recycling Program
How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

We keep a lot of snacks and drinks around the office and I noticed a lot of bottles and cans were landing in the trash and there was no real plan for the recycling cans around the office. I had some spare time so I started fishing out the recyclables and now we have a thriving CRV program at the office that I take in every couple months or so. We've cashed in about $20 in recyclables so far and the money will go towards office treats!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Anna Shannon's avatar
    Anna Shannon 4/29/2021 9:36 AM
I love upcycling clothing and trading clothes with my sister. I haven't gone shopping in years (mostly because I haven't had time or budget) but I rarely need to buy new things because my sister and my friends and I all trade and share clothes
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Buy Bamboo
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

I recently bought a new mattress and got bamboo sheets to go with it. Oh buddy. Bamboo sheets are where it's at. So much softer, so much cooler, and the fabric wears in rather than wearing out. It's a better product all the way around, much prefer them to just about any other kind of bedding, and they're sustainable and ethically produced!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

One of the best things about having a dog (aside from all the unconditional love and snuggles) is how much I'm out walking now. I live in the middle of downtown and the whole area is optimized to be traveled by foot, but I never did before I had a dog. The neighborhoods near my apartment are SO CUTE. They're all older houses that are beautifully maintained and so many people have citrus trees and they put boxes of fruit out front for passers-by to take. I've made so much fresh-squeezed lemonade these last few weeks and I'm thriving. Pup loves the area too, he loves meeting new friends and staring at squirrels (he never chases them, only stares at them. Weirdo.) and I think he appreciates everyone's commitment to making our neighborhood beautiful as well.

    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

Reducing and recycling are already a major part of my lifestyle at this point, but I think I could focus a bit more on repurposing items that still have a useful life left in them. My living space is tiny so space is at a premium and I tend to want to toss anything that isn't serving an immediate purpose (tossing as responsibly as possible), but some things really could have a second life by repurposing them. One of my favorite ways to do this is by repurposing old liquor bottles into soap dispensers, and I get the soap from a refillery here in town so no excess plastic!
