I found out during this last month through my BA 313 class about how bad fast fashion is for the environment. We have been discussing a case that involves Dakota, a clothing producer, who wants to invest in a new product called Texloop technology. This process would produce clothing from clothing and textile scraps. I will continue to advocate for buying clothing from brands that are sustainable and use recycled materials.

How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

For this action, I did a little investigating on the climate-friendly supermarket map. Unfortunately, the closest supermarket with a green tag (HFC Free) was in Lake Oswego by Portland. It seems as if there might not be enough data on our area, or we do not have any climate-friendly supermarkets.

For this action, I took some time to look over the links provided in the dropdown. I enjoyed the way that Energysage.com outlined the benefits of electric cars. The fact that they can reduce and even eliminate your fuel costs is crazy. I spend so much on gas when I travel back and forth. A benefit we all know is that they help the environment by reducing car emissions but they also make you energy independent. After reading these, I have decided that I should help out by investing in an electric car. I will have to save up and work hard to afford one, but that is my next item.

Over the last month, I took any opportunity I could to remind people in my community to use reusable bags. Granted, we live in Oregon and plastic bags are banned for the most part, but whenever I saw a roommate or friend using a bag when they clearly did not need one, I would kindly remind them to bring a bag or just carry it. Personally, I am not making much of a difference, but if my actions to remind people encourages others to pass the word on, we can use less waste and help the planet as a community.

I have had patellar tendinitis in my knee for the last 3 months so I do a lot of walking rather than running. This challenge is something that I think about all the time. I tend to not look at my phone when I walk because I like to look at the unique Corvallis houses. I have noticed that I like the areas with lush neighborhoods without any apartment complexes the most. The lighting and towering tall apartments just aren't as enjoyable to walk by. My favorite part is the plants that homeowners plant that bloom this time of year and make them unique. I vote that apartments are not built anymore, they take the soul out of a sweet town.

How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

For this action, I did a little searching online and I found out the proper way to dispose of refrigerators and freezers. Leafscore.com describes the system in place in the USA. The EPA has a Responsible Appliance Disposal Program, also known as RAD, which helps to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The program includes RAD picking up your used refrigerator and they transport it to a dedicated recycling center. There they remove all the refrigerants and other recyclable materials. This process removes about 85% of the weight as compared to typical waste.

I took some time to research online how to differentiate sell by, best by, and use by. I found on USDA.gov the full explanation of this topic. They say that Best If Used/Best By indicates the date that the food will have the best flavor or quality. Sell By indicates how long the store should sell the product on the shelves. Lastly, Use By represents the latest date you should use the product while at the best quality.

For spring break I bought a flight ticket to Mexico, so after that, I installed a string in the backyard to hang dry my clothes instead of using the dryer from now on. After taking sustainability in college, I knew how much CO2 planes produce, so I figured I'd help by switching to air dry. It worked great since the first few weeks of April were so nice without any rain. From now on, I plan to air dry my clothes as often as I can while avoiding rain.
