So, while living up in the mountains and working from home, my daily walking challenge was a bit limited, from 10" inches of snow at random times throughout the month and other times wet/muddy, I have tried to do the best effort with this. Though I have been able to really try to tune out of technology while eating my meals and along the way have learned a few extra globally friendly ways to decrease my carbon footprint. I have also ordered my windows to finish up my task there and found some LED lighting which is easing on my eyes. Great way to really rethink how I live my day to day.

    Buildings Upgrade My Windows
How does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

    Jeanette Poole's avatar
    Jeanette Poole 4/22/2021 12:38 PM
Upgrading my windows and doors not only helps save cost on heating my home, but helps create insulation to keep warm in and cold out. Creating a lesser of a footprint is key here, so using my limited electricity for heating, having improved windows will help achieve longer lasting results.

Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Jeanette Poole's avatar
    Jeanette Poole 4/18/2021 9:34 AM
I had not really put a name to this prior, although after researching this it is like when cattle farmers take their herds up to higher grounds during the summer to feed off the vegetation in the forests, not only does this help with cutting down risks of erosion / fire mitigation, but increases the forests from fertilization, etc.

Biggest advantage if not mentioned above is the ability to carry a profitable livestock operation while creating long term investments in the forest and timber products.

Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Jeanette Poole's avatar
    Jeanette Poole 4/18/2021 9:28 AM
There are several pros/cons to geothermal energy and the best place that I have experienced this activity is in Iceland where most of their energy comes from geothermal. Since this has a lot to do with the earth's core investing in these is quite expensive where I would need to have it, and due tot he water/electricity that would be needed to utilize such there could be high costs and dome dry spells if water is a shortage.

If living in California - or the western states where there is much more activity this would be more profitable. I would however, continue to utilize this source of energy when visiting those mineral baths/hot springs around the USA which use this type of energy to heat and cool their buildings.

Investing in Geothermal Energy - Yes, there is only 1 publicly traded company, but the value has soared and investments have exceeded $675mil in 2020.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

When eating without the distraction of social media, electronics, etc... you get to experience engaging conversations, learn about someone else's day/life, etc... Perhaps you are eating alone, you can people watch at a restaurant, sit outside and eat with the wildlife, maybe just listen to the birds singing and enjoy the sun warming up your face while on a deck somewhere. I live in the mountains so I love to watch the jets fly past wondering where they are heading, pondering a new travel idea. Slowing down also helps you digest better and absorb the energy you are putting into the meal. Double points if you was able to create it.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Jeanette Poole's avatar
    Jeanette Poole 4/12/2021 12:44 PM
Really, understanding the importance of when I will be consuming my purchases, if I am not going to use something soon, then I will need to determine if I should purchase it or freeze it when I get home. I have also started really managing my food intake for health reasons, so food waste for me has always been high priority, even so now as waste on anything just create more stuff in all aspects.

Since I found the right LED Lighting, I will now get out and purchase the rest for my home. So many more options out there than several years ago.

Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Jeanette Poole's avatar
    Jeanette Poole 4/12/2021 12:39 PM
Yes the benefits are great for living things as well as developing sustainable produce. Funny as I learned that to create BioChar it takes limited oxygen to make the product - wonder since I live at 9000' that is why I see it so much when I have fires - less oxygen.

    Electricity Calculate My Carbon Footprint
What stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?

    Jeanette Poole's avatar
    Jeanette Poole 4/12/2021 12:34 PM
The number of my carbon footprint - though not asking much on actually where I live (in the mountains), so I am assuming that this is based on sub division related information. I live very limitedly at home and use only electricity for my work and few things around the home, but I use a wood stove for heating and I do not have A/C. I have inquired on Solar Panels for my home though my area does not support these even though I am a prime candidate for such. I have a well, so I try to watch my water consumption and do not use the wood stove as often since I have south facing windows which keep my home warm in the winter.
