Maria's actions
Electricity
Use Cold Water
I'm going to use cold water for my laundry for the rest of the month. Decrease my carbon footprint. (and it saves the clothes too!!)
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Clean the Canals
I live on a canal and have noticed a lot of garbage due to the low water levels. I'm going to clean the half mile length of canal behind my house.
Industry
Dispose of Batteries and Paint Properly
I'm in the process of moving and will make sure that I dispose of all toxins appropriately including old paint, batteries, and technology.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Conservation Agriculture, Regenerative Annual Cropping
I will spend at least 120 minutes learning about the need for more regenerative agriculture.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Maria Polgano 5/01/2021 9:27 AMI had a lot of fun doing this challenge. I always try to do my part by recycling and volunteering to clean beaches, but this challenge made me go out back and clean the canal that I live on, and I think my neighbors took notice. I also switched the auto-setting on my washing machine to "tap cold" water; my clothes are just as clean! I'll keep it going--There Is No Planet B! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Maria Polgano 4/29/2021 10:00 AMI already don't pay attention to dates because I don't like wasting food or money. I did share the information that I read with family members that are not as conscious as I am. :) -
Maria Polgano 4/29/2021 9:58 AMGreat. I feel really good about everything that I did! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Maria Polgano 4/19/2021 4:27 PMI use too many paper towels because I'm always cleaning something from my hands to my counters. It's constant. I need to move to wash cloths. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Maria Polgano 4/19/2021 4:25 PMAnimals. I've noticed so many more animals since the pandemic started, and I've noticed how many are hit by cars. We're encroaching on their territory. I'm not sure what we can do about that, but I do walk/ride to run any errands that are within a mile from my house.
