Transportation

Make it a Habit to Drive for better MPG

By far, the best recommendation to reduce your fuel consumption is to NOT drive your car. Opt to walk or bike when you can. When you have to drive, there are a few habits to be mindful of to reduce your fuel consumption. Avoiding bad driving habits like accelerating too quickly or late braking and using your cruise control more frequently can all improve MPG. To make things more interesting, keep track of your MPG with each tank fill-up and challenge yourself or compete with a friend to improve the results each time. Click below to LEARN more driving habits to reduce your fuel consumption.

Improve the MPG on my existing car.

Not everyone has the pocket book to purchase a new electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle. But you can still do your part to improve your current vehicle's MPG. Regular maintenance and replacement of a few key items will go a long way toward that goal. Click the LEARN button below to explore what you can do to get the most out of your tank of gas:

Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/29/2021 2:56 PM
Traditionally, in our patriarchal society, women are expected by default to be in charge of household labor (even if they work) . Women are expected to support the family by raising the children and maintaining the household. As a result, I would guess that a lot of their money goes into supporting the family.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/29/2021 2:46 PM
We sought out a black- & women-owned business for our first permanent face masks around a year ago, but other than that I haven't done much. Looking on that list of women-owned businesses, I can easily support these businesses by purchasing products that I usually purchase at other places. Also, there are some brands that I've purchased from that I didn't realize are women-owned!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/29/2021 2:32 PM
Balance is important to prevent the exploitation of certain resources. Without balance, certain resources may be depleted too quickly/too much, which will disrupt the other resources and the ecosystem as a whole.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/29/2021 2:10 PM
It definitely allows me to be more liberal with consuming food in my refrigerator, as I am normally pretty wary of food that has passed the "use by/best by" date. This will hopefully lead to less food waste from my household!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/13/2021 9:18 AM
For me, time, convenience, and energy consumption are some of the main factors that influence my choice of transportation. Also, for some of my trips, the ability to transport items can also factor into that choice, like when I go grocery shopping or need to bring my mountain bike to a ride. Coverage and convenience would need to change for me. In Atlanta, our public transport coverage is decent in the city, between the buses and the trains, but there are a lot of destinations in nearby areas outside of the city that are impossible to reach without a personal vehicle. Also, I would love to take Amtrak for longer journeys, but it's coverage and convenience is limited (through no fault of Amtrak, I know they consistently receive mediocre funding, but that's a different story). For example, if I wanted to take a trip to Chicago from Atlanta, I'd have to travel through DC for a 36-hour journey. A well-connected high speed rail network would fix this. Again, I'm not blaming Amtrak, I know they have a plethora of impediments that prevent them from running efficient services.

What stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/07/2021 7:31 AM
I always forget how much air travel contributes to my carbon footprint - it's so much! Also, I've been trying to eat a vegetarian diet, and that has significantly reduced my footprint!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/02/2021 2:17 PM
Driving isolates you from the outside world, not just through the closed-off, sound-proof nature of cars but also through the speed at which you traverse streets and neighborhoods. Additionally, driving can be a stressful method of transportation, especially when you're caught in congestion.
Taking transit is much less stressful than driving - all you have to do is hop on the bus/train and relax! You can read, play on your phone, enjoy the scenery, or nap (just make sure you wake up before your stop!). It's also a fairly social form of transportation, as you have many interactions with other riders.
Biking is enjoyable, in that you get exercise and get to enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy using my bike to take routes that I normally wouldn't see with a car. However, depending on where you bike, it can also be stressful, as riding alongside vehicles can be dangerous and nerve-wracking.
Walking is enjoyable and not stressful. It's relaxing to enjoy the outdoors at an easy pace and see the sights. It only gets stressful when crossing streets, as vehicles are not inclined to stop for you (even when it's state law).

Great points. With the COVID and quarantine periods still going on in many places. It is tiring staying at home. Then getting in a car by yourself and going somewhere. The isolation does make an impact to us. Getting on mass transit in a safe way is definitely relaxing. In addition, biking and walking is a great exercise since so many people do not incorporate an exercise program as part of their routine.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Nick Padula's avatar
    Nick Padula 4/02/2021 2:08 PM
My vision of a sustainable community consists of both renewable energy sources and minimal energy usage. It is great to have renewable energy sources to power the community, but it is just as important that people and companies look for ways to reduce energy consumption in the first place.

Individuals can do things like bike/walk/take transit instead of drive or turn off lights and appliances. It's also important that companies also take steps to become more energy-efficient, as many corporations are also responsible for a lot of energy consumption.

Great points. We might need to get a little old skool. My grandparents would not use the dryer machine after washing clothes. Instead, they would hang their clothes in the back yard in the sun. In a few hours, they were dry due to the breeze and sun. If hanging clothes outside is not an option, perhaps in a garage, or bathroom. It will take longer but, no energy will be used to dry clothes.
