Save Rigaud Mountain
Rigaud Mountain is an expansive natural resource that we rely upon to run many of our Outdoor Education courses, here at JAC. It is under extreme pressure from development and mismanagement, and in desperate need of protection. Facing COVID and the Climate Crisis, the need to protect our few remaining local intact forests, is more stronger than ever. We need them, for our health and wellness, and they are disappearing. If you are able, please support this important cause and take a few moments to forward this letter to others who understand its importance. The petition and funding pages are accessible through the "Learn More" button.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Research and Advocate for High-Speed RailWhat are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?
Stesha Ong 4/29/2021 7:37 PMConvenience can surely affect my choice of transportation because if a bus stop or station is not nearby it cannot be considered a option of transportation if it is not easily accessible. Not only that but time taken on the ride also makes a difference because sometimes different modes of transportation are slower than the other which will surely affect my choice depending on whether I am in a rush or not especially if I wake up late :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Muscle Power on Earth DayDid you have any obstacles getting to and from campus with your "muscle transportation" of choice?
Stesha Ong 4/29/2021 10:18 AMIt was definitely a tough way of commuting via bicycle because I am still a beginner and the campus is really far from my house. I think my low stamina was definitely an obstacle but nonetheless it was fun to do something good for the environment!

Melissa Tomecz 4/29/2021 6:38 PMGood for you, Stesha! I am proud :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Stesha Ong 4/29/2021 10:14 AMMy transportation choices allow me to actually have a break and think about what I need to do. The scenery is very calming and really helps with lifting my mood everyday without fail. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Stesha Ong 4/28/2021 4:35 AMI will have to educate my entire family to use energy only when needed because a lot of energy is wasted in the lights that are left on when not needed. We will have to work together to remind each other to do this not only to save energy but also to save money. We could also start investing in more fuel-efficient goods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Stesha Ong 4/18/2021 5:37 PMI use plastic bags, coffee cups and plastic containers for food a lot. I substituted these by using reusable cloth bags that I can wash so that it can be clean and reusable to buy groceries. I try to make drinks like coffee and tea at home and limit the amount I drink outside to prevent myself from using coffee cups because I tend to forget to bring my own bottle when I go out to buy these drinks. When I takeout, I try to use my own containers now instead of plastic ones to be more sustainable and eco-friendly. If I do ever use plastic products, I will try to reuse it especially for plastic bags before recycling it. -
Stesha Ong 4/17/2021 2:00 PMToday was colder than usual and I was not able to walk as long as I wanted today but I will definitely try to make up for it tomorrow and hopefully the weather will get better as time goes on :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Support a Community GardenWhat are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?
Stesha Ong 4/16/2021 12:42 PMCommunity garden allow people more access to plant more things and we would have multiple people caring for the soil and earth instead of it being one tedious task for just one person. It also encourages team work which would cause our community to become closer which is something I would really like to see. When we look back at the work that we all had a part in creating, it would bring everybody lots of joy while being eco-friendly which makes your work all the more satisfying. People can also learn from one another more about gardening and they can exchange ideas which is somethig I would like to learn from others who would have more experience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Companies Leading in Green EnergyEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Stesha Ong 4/16/2021 12:37 PMApple and Intel uses renewable energy sources in the production of their goods which is really inspiring as they are both famous companies and we could support them by buying their products but unfortunately that is very expensive. However, we could bring to light how they use green energy by sharing the information around which may draw in some people who are thinking of buying from them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Stesha Ong 4/15/2021 7:58 PMIn my community I would think that some of the adult's old-fashioned way of thinking that has been instilled in them when they were young is one of the barriers to women's equal participation. Not only that, but women themselves are believing that they may not be able to attain equal participation which is why sometimes women do not stand up; but this I can see is changing fast as we all grow more self-aware. Awareness may also be another barrier as some women may not be aware that they are able to attain equal participation and some people take advantage of this fact sadly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Stesha Ong 4/15/2021 7:54 PMI could try advocating for geothermal energy but I would have to research more about the area first to see if we are able to lean more on geothermal energy and whether it would be beneficial for us. I can also spend more time researching about the topic and sharing it around. It is quite an interesting form of energy which I think is something amazing!
