Action Track: Climate Resilience
Participate in making your community a better place for Earth Day!
By April 30, take one action to participate in making your community a better place. Be creative about your action! From picking up litter along a river to planting a garden to attending / volunteering for an Earth Day event - do something out in your community by April 30, take a picture of what you did, and post it as a blogpost on Ecochallenge.org.
Buildings
House
I will attempt to reduce the amount of time I have the water heater on and the amount of gas that is used to heat my house.
Transportation
Travel
I will only travel by air when I need to and try to reduce the amount of driving that I do by walking more.
Industry
Properly Dispose of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to properly dispose of my refrigerator, freezer, and other refrigerants at the end of their useful lives.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Land Sinks
Learn More about Silvopasture
Silvopasture
I will spend at least 10 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Joseph A Monaco 4/30/2021 3:40 PMI had not heard of silvopasture before now, which is the reason why I selected this action. There are several benefits from silvopasture for the economy and the environment. It seems like a simple idea that providing trees and livestock on land can improve things spanning from fertilizers to more nutrients, and the trees can even help protect the livestock from some weather. Based on my quick research of this topic, it seems the only downside is that it requires the use of a large area of land, and it takes some extra effort to maintain it. However, it seems that livestock farmers would benefit more from this extra work than they would lose. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Properly Dispose of RefrigerantsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Joseph A Monaco 4/30/2021 3:34 PMI personally do not fear or despair climate change, as living in that state does not help solve any of these issues. I do recognize the impacts, and understand how negative of an impact climate change can have on the world in severe scenarios. However, I do not worry about it in my day-to-day life. I do what I can personally, and read what I can so that I understand how the Earth may change in my lifetime. The only thing that concerns me is the lack of agreement between everyone on this issue, as some people even bluntly think it's not real. There are countless data out there and experiments that prove this is real, and likely accelerated by humans, and people can only continue to ignore it for so long. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Joseph A Monaco 4/30/2021 3:29 PMIt is more expensive and requires more resources and energy to raise cattle, pigs, etc constantly throughout our lives. There are mixed data regarding how eating meat affects the human body. Some studies will conclude that it is healthy and provides many nutrients vital to humans, and others will conclude that humans should limit the amount of meat, specifically red meat, they eat due to a number of health concerns. The science around how these animals impact the climate is more agreed upon, as the release of methane is becoming a bigger problem as the population forces the number of farm animals to increase. Methane traps heat at a far greater rate than carbon dioxide does, though it remains in the atmosphere for a shorter time. Nevertheless, fixing the methane issue is something we as an international society must figure out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Joseph A Monaco 4/30/2021 3:24 PMIn regard to methane digesters, it seems to me that inventing and innovating new ways to prevent methane from escaping to the atmosphere at the same rate it does now will help decrease the rate of global warming. I also liked the idea that this reserve can then be used as fuel or a source of electricity, making the idea of methane digesters more appealing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Joseph A Monaco 4/30/2021 12:02 PMAll of the seafood I buy here in Oregon is either farmed Atlantic Salmon or wild Sockeye Salmon. The farmed Atlantic Salmon is generally viewed as safer as there is no risk of bycatch, however, there can be concerns as to what food the fish are receiving. Sockeye Salmon is fished in many different ways, and just by looking at what's for sale in the store, you may not always know how it was caught. It is best to ask the butcher if they know, as if it is caught in an unsustainable way, like with longline fishing or net trolling, then it is better to pick the farmed option.
