Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/29/2021 6:31 PM
I love my daily walk and am super thankful my neighborhood has tons of sidewalks. However there is tons of construction in the area and the trucks passing through all day make my walks less enjoyable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/29/2021 6:05 PM
The more I learn about the environmental challenges the more passionate I get about sustainability! Its overwhelming to know our climate clock is ticking but I'm hopeful with enough people and good policy we can make meaningful change.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/29/2021 5:48 PM
Reusing / repurposing items you already have! Or thrift or rent cloths when you need something new
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/29/2021 5:33 PM
Sheesh! If I saved $1500 I would use it to go on a trip!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/28/2021 5:55 PM
Well I learned that it could be possible to use geothermal energy in your own home so that's really cool. Besides that, educating people that it even exists is a good first step.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings Learn about the Legacy of Redlining
How does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/28/2021 5:39 PM
Because of old redlining practices, cities today are still very unequal. Predominantly bipoc neighborhoods are more likely to be near hazardous waste sites and factories and less likely to have trees and green space. It's super important to address these issues when city planning to make urban design more equitable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/27/2021 6:51 PM
I had heard of biomass before but wasn't super familiar with how it worked. Its interesting to note that its only worth using when it's in the proper "perennial form". But if done properly I think it can be a great supplement to other renewable sources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/27/2021 6:41 PM
I always try to eat the skins when possible (instead of peeling) and I freeze a lot of the stalks and leaves and throw them in smoothies.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/27/2021 6:39 PM
Meat is bad for the planet because of its land use and methane pollution. It's also not good for us as humans. Many studies have linked meat consumption with disease
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Melissa Migden's avatar
    Melissa Migden 4/27/2021 6:35 PM
To me a sustainable community uses local resources and doesn't need to rely heavily from other place.
