Elsa's actions
Industry
recycle frozen food boxes and other waxed cardboard boxes
I signed a petition for waxed cardboard boxes (food boxes) to be recycled in this area. I shared this action with my friends. I chose this action because Waste Management does not recycle these items in this area.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 1 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
clean drinking water
There are microfibers in our drinking water. We have microfibers in our blood system. The city follows EPA guidelines. EPA does not answer my questions about microfibers in our drinking water. I am contacting 2 companies that are making filters for different uses. One is Brita that makes water filters. I need to find out about the other one if they can make water filters for washing machines to collect microfibers from the microfibers garments and others. This would avoid the microfibers go into the rivers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Elsa Meinig 4/26/2021 12:56 PMI am changing my habits, I am buying soap bars - even shampoo soap bars- and powder detergents in carton boxes. Not every store carries these items. -
Elsa Meinig 4/21/2021 3:45 PMI found the polystyrene recycling center here in Wenatchee WA and dropped off the packaging material from a new TV screen we bought. The Waste Management can not send it to the recycling center. If it goes in the trash it contaminates the soil. -
Elsa Meinig 4/17/2021 6:02 PMAbout clean drinking water, I invite anybody who is interested in researching ZEROWATER water filters. These filters are used only for domestic use. Not commercial use. -
Elsa Meinig 4/17/2021 5:51 PMFrozen food boxes and other cardboard boxes are very difficult to recycle - according to a spokesperson at Waste Management. I spoke with him today at Earth Fair in Wenatchee. Such kind of recycling is not available in our area. -
Elsa Meinig 4/14/2021 6:37 PMI am replacing liquid soaps (shampoo, shower, hand washing, dishwashing, laundry detergent) with soap bars and powder dishwashing/laundry detergent in cardboard containers. No more plastic in this department! -
Elsa Meinig 4/12/2021 6:11 PMI signed a petition for waxed cardboard to be recycled in this area at recyclecartons.com. If enough people signed this petition, maybe one day Waste Management can recycle the waxed food cartons.
