  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/30/2021 12:22 PM
What a great read on regenerative agriculture from drawdown.org! Regenerative agriculture has the potential to capture additional carbon, increase biodiversity by breaking up monocultures and create more sustainable soil banks!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
How feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/30/2021 12:19 PM
Did you know that here in Sacramento an upcycled medium-density fiberboard (MDF) product will soon make its commercial debut? The boards are made from an agricultural rice by product !

I was able to attend the NPSI Intersections Panel today, what a great conversation from different backgrounds around what climate change and sustainability mean to Deloitte. One of the most interesting things I learned is that researchers are able to project your life expectancy based on your zip code! This event was recorded so can still be viewed !
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/27/2021 3:12 PM
Did you know that concrete has a large carbon footprint? It was great to learn more, and read about more sustainable concrete options!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/26/2021 5:08 PM
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations.  A way to make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one is to reduce consumption of goods that have palm oil in them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/26/2021 5:07 PM
I have done my best to reduce the amount of single use items, but packaging from food items I buy is still an area for improvement!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/26/2021 5:06 PM
Did you know biochar, a method of burning waste under a layer of earth, can sequester carbon and be an excellent fertilizer? I didn't!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/23/2021 10:20 AM
I hadn't heard of the term silvopasture before, now that I have learned more about it, I think the biggest advantage is the incorporation of natural processes and ecosystems into farming and grazing
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/23/2021 10:14 AM
It's surprising how much protein we technically need each day, reducing meat consumption is one of the best ways to reduce our footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Shehnaz Mannan's avatar
    Shehnaz Mannan 4/23/2021 10:09 AM
Mindful eating is something I hadn't prioritized before this EcoChallenge, it makes a big difference and provides a nice break in the day!
