Communicate the need to Price Carbon
Thousands of economists agree that we need to put a price on carbon pollution. There's a 'carbon cashback' bill in Congress introduced this week in the House that will do that - returning money to households. We need to mobilize around this as a best first step (and do everything else in this challenge, too!)
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions

I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.
Action Track: Climate Resilience

Advocate For More Packaging Options
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Industry
I will be Less Material in a Material World
If I live on campus I'll follow FreeUse on Insta (@bard.freeuse) (and I'll donate there as well) in support of a circular economy. Away from Bard I will find sustainable clothing options, avoiding fast fashion retailers, valuing long-lived clothing and supporting Bard-born orgs like Thrift to Fight and Cahoots.
Transportation
Count Your Steps & Share
Count how many steps it takes to get from one point to another on campus or where you live. For example, count how many steps it takes to get to Kline from Robbins. DM the BardE3 or Bard Office of Sustainability Insta with the number of steps you counted and we’ll use the info to make posts about walkability! @bardsustainability @barde3bos

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Hannah Lyons-Cavazos 4/07/2021 8:29 AMOne of the fish choices that is on the 'Avoid' list for California is shrimp (specifically, Pacific Rock Shrimp). I don't eat a great deal of seafood but I definitely eat shrimp and rarely know what kind it is or whether it was sustainable fished. I will look into regional alternatives and will look for MSC, ASC and BAP certifications on the seafood that I purchase.-
Laurie Husted 4/09/2021 5:06 PMI spent several minutes in front of the shrimp freezer today with the Monterey Bay Seafood watch website open but ended up using ecosia (the search engine that plants trees ) and ended up finding a bag with the BAP certification - it was the Hannaford store brand which was good to sea / see :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Support Indigenous Peoples' Land ManagementIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Hannah Lyons-Cavazos 4/05/2021 1:03 PMThe restoration of global ecosystem equilibrium must be a central goal of any sustainability movement. The earth possesses the fantastic capacity to keep its countless ecosystems in balance through natural means; it is only because of human interference that this balance is interrupted. Therefore, actions to mitigate and reduce human impacts to allow for the restoration of natural balance must be the driving forces behind any sustainability initiative.
