REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Maddi Loshaw 4/30/2021 10:28 AMI'm lucky to live in an area that has many women-owned businesses, such as Hopewell, Mini Mott, and Diversey Wine. I've made them my go-to takeout places during the pandemic, and even bought a monthly subscription at one of them to steadily support them during this tough time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Express My Support For Equitable Biking InfrastructureWhat do you like most about biking in your city? What would you like to improve?
Maddi Loshaw 4/29/2021 10:52 AMI like the autonomy and independence it gives me of being able to move/commute on my own schedule. Chicago can do so so much to improve safety for cyclists though. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Maddi Loshaw 4/29/2021 10:50 AMI do a lot to lead by example within my peer group. I think it's important for other people to see that their friend gladly takes the bus or other transit options rather than opting for an Uber. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Maddi Loshaw 4/29/2021 10:47 AMI need to work on "refusing" more. Especially when it comes to extra napkins, silverware, and packaging that comes with takeout or delivery food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Maddi Loshaw 4/28/2021 10:26 AMI save a lot of vegetable skins and ends etc. in the freezer to make vegetable stock. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Maddi Loshaw 4/28/2021 10:24 AMSupporting local farms feels great because it means I get to eat food that was grown nearby and support farmers and their families in my own community. It helps me feel connected with both my environment and my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Maddi Loshaw 4/28/2021 10:22 AMUsing active transportation makes me feel so much more connected with my community and environment. I literally walk passed my neighbors and say hi, notice litter on the ground and pick it up, and notice infrastructure short fallings that I can reach out to my alderman about. When we're in cars, we're so disconnected from anything outside our metal box, to the point that we even forget how dangerous driving is to those on foot or on bike around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Maddi Loshaw 4/20/2021 10:50 AMI'm trying to grow (some) of my own food this summer. It all starts with planting seeds, which I've been tending beneath grow lights and lots of extra water the past couple of weeks. It's incredible to watch a tiny seed sprout roots and leaves, and slowly grow into a beautiful plant that will hopefully yield fruit/vegetables for me this summer.
