Three more days left and we are still leading! Well done everyone!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/20/2021 9:20 AM
I like supporting local farmers and producers. I have the impression the food is fresher and more flavorful, since it's not harvested weeks in advance to be shipped around the world. This also cuts down on transportation emissions, which in some areas is the largest emissions category.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/20/2021 9:18 AM
Women are generally the caretakers of the family and tend to not only children, but elders. This is also why climate change disproportionately affects women, because when an extreme weather event hits, they stay behind to tend to those who can't flea quickly. Leaving them in unsafe conditions as sexual violence against women increases after such events (first responders busy with other issues). This is not just a third world problem, the same happened for example after Hurricane Katrina.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/20/2021 9:14 AM
When I eat mindfully, I feel fuller at the end of the meal and enjoyed my food more. Otherwise I just feel like adding gas to the tank but not really knowing what went in.

We are still first, woohoooo! 15 more days to go!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/14/2021 11:12 AM
I don't understand how people generate food waste. I love leftovers since it means I don't have to cook or wait for food to be ready. We very rarely through food out, only if we purchased produce and it somehow goes bad the next day. At least we can compost that locally. Because we don't waste food, we can invest in sometime pricier organic food, which is better for humans and the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/14/2021 11:10 AM
Electrify heating (e.g. through heat pumps), decentralized solar with battery storage to create more resilient micro-grids.

    Ting Lee 4/14/2021 11:09 AM
Though I can't afford a house in the Bay Area, I like planning all the solutions I would implement to reduce the footprint of my house. Heat pumps are super interesting and well worth the investment. They also can replace fossil fuels for heating, which has been a bigger challenge than renewable electricity. If you have a house, or plan on buying, look into heat pumps (pair them ideally with solar and a battery:) )
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Research Heat Pumps
Why is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/14/2021 9:35 AM
Without an intact environment and stable climate, we humans will be far worse off in a world that already isn't ideal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Ting Lee's avatar
    Ting Lee 4/13/2021 9:29 AM
I hate all the spam mail I get, so regularly ask to be removed from mailing lists or unsubscribe from emails (they also waste a lot of energy, especially if you don't delete them).
