I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Land Sinks
Use a Boogie Board for daily notes in lieu of paper
Use less paper products for notes by taking more notes on a Boogie Board
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 1 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Hannah Kliphan 4/30/2021 4:42 AMTime spent with friends and family. This past year of not seeing family much has been difficult. Also experiences. Stuff comes and goes but experiences are part of what makes you who you are. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Hannah Kliphan 4/30/2021 4:40 AMI think people in richer countries eat more meat partly because it’s become ingrained in society. Many rituals rotate around food and meat plays a prominent roll (Thanksgiving-turkey, BBQs-burgers and hot dogs, etc). Eating meat isn’t great for the planet. As more people reduce the amount of meat they consume hopefully that will become the new normal.-
Rebeca Barrios-Torres 4/30/2021 8:21 AMAt first I found eating less meat to be difficult...but it is slowly becoming my new normal. Like all things...it takes time. But a lifestyle change for the better I think.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Hannah Kliphan 4/30/2021 4:32 AMYes, biochar can also help restore soil by adding nutrients back in the soil if buried in it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Hannah Kliphan 4/25/2021 3:33 AMI hadn’t heard of Silvopasture before. It seems like a great idea. I like that the land is more multifunctional. It’s also nice that the livestock gets to enjoy a little shade. The biggest advantage has to be that it’s making the area more fertile. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Hannah Kliphan 4/23/2021 4:28 AMOne of my neighbors is a retired gentleman who walks the road each morning picking up any trash that he sees. It makes walking on the road significantly more enjoyable. I wish more people had his attitude and were as willing to step up. He’s a great role model. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Hannah Kliphan 4/23/2021 4:22 AMFrom a dieting standpoint serving/eating less is a great way to loose weight. A lot of people (myself included) tend to eat more than we really need to and could cut back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Accelerating Solutions Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy CreditsYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Hannah Kliphan 4/22/2021 4:16 AMDue to the pandemic our company has been having us work from home. Each night when I finish work I turn off my laptop and switch off the power strip the laptop, monitors and headset are plugged into. I suspect I could save more electricity by being more vigilant in turning off other power strips around my home that are not in use. Hanging clothes to dry is another great way to save electricity.-
Rebeca Barrios-Torres 4/30/2021 8:25 AMSuch a simple thing to do...yet makes such a difference.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Hannah Kliphan 4/17/2021 6:17 PMMy husband and I purchased our first home less than a year ago. Each good weathered weekend we have been working outdoors to improve the yard. Spending time pulling up weeds, re-doing the rock drainage system, mulching, picking up brush and cleaning up leaves have made me feel more connected and invested in the property. The projects that we’ve been doing also give me a sense of pride. It’s amazing to look at the completed project and know that we did that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Hannah Kliphan 4/17/2021 6:10 PMNapkins/paper towels/tissues. I have been trying to use more fabric towels/rags in place of paper towels for cleaning. I am considering switching to cloth napkins instead of paper ones but am curious if having more laundry will be more wasteful of resources than using paper goods (made from bamboo or recycled paper). Does anyone have any thoughts on which is better for the environment? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Hannah Kliphan 4/15/2021 4:56 AMResearch other options. No argument that it’s easy to hop on Amazon and order whatever you may be looking for but we can reduce waste by researching other options. When I want a ‘new’ lamp or a wheelbarrow or whatever it may be, instead of ordering it I have been checking local swap/sell websites. Often I can find the items I want at a much cheaper cost as someone local is selling their old item. The item may not always be exactly what I had in mind but can usually be painted or modified in some way to make it just right.
