REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Nicole Ketterer 4/18/2021 1:55 PMI didn't realize how much of our western diet affects deforestation. While I was happy to find my coffee on the list of products that do not contribute to deforestation, I love chocolate and eat meat and dairy so I have room for improvement. I'm going to start by trying to eat more seasonally and shopping from local food producers more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Nicole Ketterer 4/09/2021 2:30 PMDetroit came to mind quickly as I was researching green gentrification. With some of the city improvements, including new green space has appeared along with expensive grocery stores I don't even shop at. I hope Detroit is helping its long time, lower income residents maintain housing and access to these new improvements as well as encouraging a partnership versus relocation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or ImmigrantsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Nicole Ketterer 4/07/2021 4:54 AMDuring the pandemic I started shopping more locally-owned small businesses, often women-owned, because their presentation far surpassed the big retailers when it came to shipping gifts. Their stellar service kept me as a loyal customer making repeat purchases still today. I also like that I can follow these women on social media and feel like I know them. An area I can improve on is seeking out more BIPOC owned businesses so I was thankful for this activity to research them in my area and online. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Nicole Ketterer 4/01/2021 1:47 PMI think smaller portions might help us feel better physically. It might reduce overeating while making us feel satisfied if a smaller plate is still full.
