  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste Products
How feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?

I spent some time learning about more eco-friendly building materials. I had no idea hemp could be used to build with, and it's properties come with many benefits includes a more stable climate/temperature inside the house. I've seen hemp used in clothing materials before, but never building. It seems very versatile.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4kKxY7KNyw

If we have these materials readily available to use, it seems like it would be easy to use them in building projects. The most difficult part will likely be the initial switch as we change from higher impact building materials, to more eco-friendly materials like hemp.

The Crimson Clover cover crop I planted last weekend is starting to sprout. I've spent a lot of time preparing for warmer weather and it's exciting when plants finally start growing. This one is especially cool because of the environmental impacts it will have on the ecosystem in my yard. The bees will love it.

I recently started the ADK-9 challenge with my dogs (hike 9 ADK dog friendly hikes). We spent 3 hours on Moxham mountain in Minerva on Saturday. Snow, mud, streams... a beautiful day :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Emily Kane's avatar
    Emily Kane 4/16/2021 11:08 AM
I just learned about silvopasture in my Ag Bus classes. The animals benefit from shade and shelter from the trees, and higher nutrients from the plants in the forest. The forest is also more stable, even in drought summers, which creates a better environment for the livestock. It's also a great way to combine two things to conserve land use. instead of the livestock taking up land in the pasture.  As the climate changes, silvopasture seems like a good solution to protecting animals from harsher hot, dry summers, and conserving land for other uses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Calculate My Carbon Footprint
What stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?

    Emily Kane's avatar
    Emily Kane 4/16/2021 10:18 AM
I've included an image of my estimated carbon footprint. I used the resource listed and it was so easy to calculate! I am planning to commute by bicycle much more often this summer and have started to think about getting a more efficient vehicle in the future. This exercise is such a great reminder of all the areas we can reduce our carbon.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

    Emily Kane's avatar
    Emily Kane 4/16/2021 10:13 AM
This one is always tough for me because I live alone so it's hard to use everything before it goes bad. It takes a lot of planning. This challenge has been helpful in making me more mindful about food waste and ways to prevent it. I also began using my compost pile again so I don't feel as bad if the food waste is being composted.

I would much rather use that money for travel (once it's ok to travel again)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Emily Kane's avatar
    Emily Kane 4/16/2021 10:10 AM
I read the articles provided and was particularly interested in this one. There are so many things to consider when changing a city like they have been doing to account for climate change and changing weather. On one hand, it's disrupting the lives of current residents and changing the housing market. On the other hand, if nothing is done, the current structure will likely be damaged due to flooding from changes in ocean levels. The change needs to be made in order to protect the city, but there also have to be more options for affordable housing (and done equitably) as part of the new initiative.

Although we don't have rising sea waters locally, there is an issue with a proposal to create a housing complex on a green space in downtown Glens Falls.

The Eco Warriors held our virtual weekly check in meeting about the Eco-Challenge. Before the meeting, I send out a Ted Talk about tree planting and creating a forest in your own backyard. For me it was a motivating short film that made tree planting seem less overwhelming. A forest can be created right in your own backyard fairly easily with lots of benefits to the planet and the ecosystem in your yard.

I spent lots of time in the yard yesterday to get in some new cover crop seeds of Crimson Clover and prepared a new bed for the summer. I learned about this process in my Soils and Argo-ecology classes I'm taking at the college this semester. By covering the bare ground it can prevent erosion, attract beneficial pollinators, and increase the nutrients in the soil.
