One of my most memorable days in college was coming into my fisheries economic class near the end of the quarter, and our professor was there with a makeshift sous vide and toaster oven cooking up salmon fillets for us to try. When he polled us about our favorite fillets, majority of us chose farmed fish. This was a surprise considering aquaculture is a heated debate, but we learned most fear surrounding farmed fish comes from a misrepresentation of the facts. When I went to Seafood Watch and started researching best choice salmon, I was impressed by the detail with which they explained the farming process to make the facts well-known. Next time at the supermarket, I'll definitely be making sure my seafood purchases line up with the "best choice" recommended by Seafood Watch.
