Nathan's actions
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Become A Master Recycler/Composter
Recycling
I will sign up for a Master Recycler/Composter program in my area.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 60 minute(s) learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Buildings
Landscape Front Garden
Installing a hose reel, planting drought resistant species and pollinators, using multiple mulches including both wood chips along with rock mulch to create an evaporation barrier.
Buildings
Explore Other Buildings Solutions
All Buildings Solutions
I will spend at least 120 minutes researching other Drawdown Buildings Solutions.
Buildings
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
Low-Flow Fixtures
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day or 450 gallons (1,680 L) a month by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Buildings
Fix Leaky Faucets
Low-Flow Fixtures
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities. Fixing leaky faucets can save up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Learn More about Silvopasture
Silvopasture
I will spend at least 60 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Electricity
Explore Other Electricity Solutions
All Electricity Solutions
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching other Drawdown Electricity Solutions.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).

Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 80 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 120 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Electricity
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
All Drawdown Solutions
I will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce my negative impact on the environment.
Electricity
Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
All Electricity Solutions
I will research and tell 1 people each day about the benefits of alternative energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters.
Electricity
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
Telepresence
I will encourage my office to hold meetings virtually whenever possible instead of requiring travel.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 45 minute(s) learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 5 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Landscape Plantings
Looking to plant 40 plants during the month of April - 23 blueberry bushes, 8 arborvitae, 2 evergreen shrubs, 2 tea plants, etc.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Nutrient Management
Nutrient Management
I will research and support local farmers who have made the decision to not use synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Nathan Hungate 4/30/2021 9:10 AMSilvopasture is not only a great way to incorporate additional nitrogen into the soil, keep weeds down, and provide an additional income source - it's also a way to diversify ones assets so that you're not completely relying on fruit production for example if you had a windstorm during fruit set which knocked all the blossoms off the trees resulting in only 20% yields that year. A great practice overall. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Companies Leading in Green EnergyEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Nathan Hungate 4/29/2021 10:17 AMA few companies that invest in green energy would be Tesla, QuantumScape, Ford with their recent battery investment fund, as well as other industry players which are developing efficient green energy alternative storage capabilities. I've both invested in and will continue to vocally and financially support such companies in order to encourage their growth -

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Install a Low-Flow ShowerheadWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Nathan Hungate 4/27/2021 11:19 AMIn order to see a sustainable water future in our area we would have to invest in water reduction for agriculture uses. For example, drip irrigation, drought resistant crops, more mulch used for crop systems. We would also have to conserve more water through investing in de-lawning campaigns to deemphasis the use of lawns within our communities and transition to native perrenial drought resistant species. There would also have to be an increase in regulation around business water usage and ensuring minimal to no leaks through providing grants to high-leakage industries such as agriculture to fix their watering systems to ensure high throughput. Low use shower faucets subsidized as well as on-demand electric heaters subsidized for those looking to transition away from hot water tanks which are incredibly inefficient. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Explore Other Buildings SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Nathan Hungate 4/26/2021 10:05 AMThere are a few amazing building techniques coming more mainstream I'm excited about. One of them is a Post Framing (pole barn like) construction. It's a much better insulated material and you can use hempcrete as a supplemental insulation to traditional fibers.
