Pat's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Save the Birds
My goal is to help birds thrive. I chose it because during the pandemic, I have become a birder. I have learned that food, water and habitat are all necessary for the survival of birds.
Buildings
Install A Toilet Tank Bank
Low-Flow Fixtures
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water a day or 330 gallons (1,230 L) a month by installing a toilet tank bank.
Buildings
Learn about the Legacy of Redlining
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about the legacy of redlining and how city planning and environmental justice issues are interconnected.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Advocate for Forest Protection
Forest Protection
I will contact 2 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests and the enforcement of existing anti-logging laws, as well as the rights of local people to protect and restore the land in their communities.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Advocate for Solar Installation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will create a plan to and advocate for solar installation at my business, apartment building, or campus.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 5 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Buildings
Keep birds safe
Goal is to prevent birds from hurting themselves because of hitting windows in my house. I have become a birder and have learned that we lose hundreds of thousands of song birds due to collisions with building. I will place bird tape on windows by feeders.
Electricity
Save Electricity
Goal is to reduce the amount of electricity used by turning off television and lights when not in use. I chose this because it's something I can actually do to make a difference.
Health and Education
One Health Initiative
Goal is to watch a webinar to learn more about the interaction between the health of humans and animals. I chose this because of covid-19 and the desire to learn how we can attempt to prevent this type of disease in the future.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Donate
Improved Clean Cookstoves
I will donate to nonprofits that install clean cookstoves in low-income countries.
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Action Track: Climate Resilience
Care for birds. Provide water, food and habitat.
My goal is to plant more native plants that can help sustain birds. I will also provide seeds, mealworms and suet. I will be sure there is fresh water. Birds need food, water and habitat. While I have many bird feeders, birds also need insects and nutrition from native plants.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
Telepresence
I will encourage my office to hold meetings virtually whenever possible instead of requiring travel.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 30 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Health and Education
Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
Health and Education
I will spend at least 35 minutes learning more about the barriers to women's equal participation and representation around the world.
Health and Education
Connect With A Nonprofit
Health and Education
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on issues affecting women, girls, and/or trans and nonbinary people in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.

Pat Hofmeister 4/30/2021 2:26 PMI have really enjoyed this challenge and will miss checking in everyday and seeing all my teammates have accomplished. My pledge is to continue my actions to help make this planet a better place for my grandchildren. -
Pat Hofmeister 4/29/2021 11:32 AMI learned so much last year on my 1st echochallenge and have continuing learning on this one. I have become a better citizen and hope to help my family and friends do the same. I will miss this, but hope to continue with my actions. -
Pat Hofmeister 4/28/2021 11:12 AMDuring this echochallenge, I learned the importance of keeping bird feeders clean and not leaving seed that has gotten very wet as it is harmful to the birds. Today it is raining and I am making sure my feeders are covered and am replacing seed as needed. It was great to see a Downy Woodpecker at my suet feeder and then my mealworm feeder. They are both covered so food isn't getting wet. -
Pat Hofmeister 4/27/2021 2:30 PMWent to the zoo today. Stayed 4 hours and walked at least 3 of them. It was a beautiful day and the animals were quite active. The zoo's horticulture staff does an amazing job with plants and flowers. As a volunteer who is waiting eagerly until we can return, I still was able to give directions and answer questions about many of our animals and zoo policies. -
Pat Hofmeister 4/26/2021 2:39 PMToday I was able to combine 2 of my challenges: gardening and the 5 R's. I bought 6 plants from Bluestone Perennials. I try to purchase locally but Bluestone's plants do not come in plastic containers. They come in 100% biodegradable pots. Just take the plastic (which is also biodegradable) wrapper off the plant and put it in the ground. So today I save 6 plastic pots from going into the trash. I used to think these pots were recyclable because they are plastic, but when I took the Echochallenge last year, I researched everything I was recycling and found out they were not! -
Pat Hofmeister 4/25/2021 1:45 PMTwo of my actions involve helping birds. I have many bird feeders and attract several different kinds of birds. I've seen many goldfinches but yesterday I saw a bird that looked like a goldfinch, but had more yelllow than a goldfinch. After researching yellow birds, I discovered that I had seen a yellow warbler. That was so exciting for me. Now I need to pay more attention when I see a yellow bird. -
Pat Hofmeister 4/24/2021 4:21 PMI took my granddog for a walk in Kirkwood Park today. As we went up and down the hiking trails, I spotted many plants that reminded me of parachutes. I've seen them before, but never researched them. Turns out, they're actually called parachute plants and are only found in the woods. -
Pat Hofmeister 4/23/2021 2:49 PMTodayI went to coffee with some friends. One of them had a plastic bag that she was going to throw away if no one wanted it. Of course, I took it and reminded her that one of our friends has a sister who takes plastic bags and turns them into sleeping mats for the homeless. She has already made 3. It takes over 850 bags to make a twin size mat. I used to refuse plastic bags and still try to use cloth bags, but I don't feel bad now when my husband brings home plastic bags because they are being used for a good cause and not going into a landfill. -

Pat Hofmeister 4/22/2021 11:43 AMNow that I've learned about Greenwashing, I found this article interesting and hope it doesn't happen in our country.
Today, the European Commission released the so-called "Delegated Act" of its Sustainable Finance Taxonomy. The EU taxonomy is a landmark regulation that will from next year define what can be labelled as a sustainable investment in the EU. However, what was supposed to be the standard against greenwashing has now become yet another greenwashing tool as the Taxonomy states that forestry (logging trees) and bioenergy (burning trees and crops for energy) make a "significant contribution to climate mitigation" and do "no significant harm" to biodiversity.
Following the release of the Delegated Act today, Birdlife is, alongside other environmental NGOs and consumer associations, suspending their activities in the Platform to protest the blatant greenwashing the taxonomy would allow.
