Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Susan Hindmarsh's avatar
    Susan Hindmarsh 4/18/2021 6:46 PM
No, first time hearing the term. In the PNW I think of it as growing crops or grazing chickens in your yard between your trees.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

Everyone: Watch Kiss The Ground on Netflix!! Narrated by Woody Harrelson, I was reluctant to watch thinking it’d bum me out but instead learned so much and it was fascinating!

Response to q: Carbon drawdown is a benefit to regen ag because the result of minimal tilling sequesters enough carbon per acre to create a massive benefit when practiced widely. Better water retention in soil is another.

It’s ok, I’m behind actions taken and eating zero waste is just as hard as I imagined, since even veggies come packaged or stickered
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Susan Hindmarsh's avatar

Maybe it’s an unconscious affiliation with abundance? Not sure. When visiting Seoul in 2019 I noticed how expensive beef is (maybe $20-25 for a smallish steak) and fish somewhat less. Chicken was not as ubiquitous as in the US and there’s more tofu and veggies in cuisine. So meat is a luxury.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Susan Hindmarsh 4/18/2021 4:55 PM
Make soup stock! Use the trimmed ends from chopped veggies like scallions, mushrooms, anything. Bring to boil, cover and simmer for maybe 30min. The longer the better but I’m usually in a hurry. The use for soup right away or freeze for later use.

I joined the challenge partly to see how large my drawdown could be if I'm consistent about the sustainable habits I believe in. The actions I chose reflect my belief that sustainable habits should be do-able for anyone, that you don't need to be 100% green to have an impact. Go PNW team! Let's really reflect on how we're doing this month! <3

Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

Reflection question: I wondered yesterday while planting salad bowls just how much uneaten lettuce I've thrown out over the years, and how much methane is released from a half head of lettuce while it decomposes.
