REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 8:32 AMRedlining not only created and continues to create segregated cities and towns, but they also adversely affect those in low-income neighborhoods with regards to climate change. Low-income neighborhoods are subject to a great exposure level of air pollution and are at a greater rick of heat-related impacts according to and article in Scientific American. According to the article I read, "many of the nation's historically redlined districts 'now contain the hottest areas' in the United States." The temperature differences between these neighborhoods and wealthier neighborhoods are staggering. Additionally, the air pollution in these redlined neighborhoods is leading to a greater mortality rate than in the other non-redlined neighborhoods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 8:18 AMThe next steps I plan to take for saving energy are to install energy efficient windows, water-saving shower head (done) and looking into different and new insulation options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 8:10 AMI think it's important to support local food systems because it ensures that local farmers are able to continue doing what they do so they won't have to sell out to the major farms. Without local farmers (especially local green farmers), the community would have fewer options (like a decimated farmer's market) and could suffer financially as a whole. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 7:59 AMRealistically, I would probably use this money to put towards paying off my student loans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Install a Low-Flow ShowerheadWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 7:58 AMSince I live in Winona, the most obvious answer to this question would be to reduce the pollution in the Mississippi river and the lakes in Winona. Lake Winona in particular has high levels of phosphates and nitrates in the water due in large part to fertilizer runoff (amongst other contributors). I'm not sure that there are any easy answers for this one, but addressing the water pollution in the lakes and river would be a great starting point. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 7:49 AMOne of my favorite outdoor activities is going for a short hike and stopping for a campfire. In Winona, there's a spot my friends and I like to frequent that we call, "The Point." While we're out there, we make sure to clean up any trash that others have left behind. Since there are trash cans and recycling bins near the trail head, it's relatively easy to clean up the area. Since The Point is on the bluffs in Winona, the trail leading to it is connected to the other trails in the bluffs. It's always fun to explore the area up there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Logan Herber 4/16/2021 7:40 AMThe next step toward energy efficiency for me will be a water-saving shower head. It's a relatively simple step and will conserve water. Either that or looking into energy efficient windows; those seem like a good idea, too.
