Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Electricity
Support Microgeneration in Low Income Countries
Small Hydropower, Micro Wind Turbines, Microgrids
I will make a donation to a nonprofit that installs microgeneration in low income countries.

Laura Gardner 4/30/2021 1:49 PMLove the ecochallenge every year! I especially loved how this year it was based on the Drawdown principles. I learned a lot! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land ManagementIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 12:07 PMBalance is everything. We have put the earth completely out of balance and the only way to get ourselves out of this mess is to restore the balance. This crisis was inevitable -- we have been living outside of our means for a long time and it's completely unsustainable for us and the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Microgeneration in Low Income CountriesHow can micro energy solutions reduce inequities? Why is this important to you?
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 12:05 PMI watched the first 30 minutes of the documentary 2040 and was struck by how excited everyone in the town in Bangladesh were about their microgrid energy options. Giving people the option to create and sell their own energy is revolutionary and thrilling. I'm all about any option that gives people power (pun intended). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Make School More AffordableWhy is it important that girls have equal access to education in order to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions?
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 11:58 AMAccess to education is so important. I can't imagine not having access to books and education for me and my family. I will do whatever is in my power to make it accessible for others around the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Help Students Overcome Health BarriersIn what other ways could you help girls overcome health barriers to being able to attend school?
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 11:57 AMAccess to period products is so important. I'll never forget reading about homeless women using trash to soak up their menstrual blood in Period Power by Nadya Okamoto.-
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 11:59 AMI was also super impressed with recent local efforts by our New Bedford YWCA to put period products in every NB school bathroom.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Give a MicroloanGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 11:56 AMThis is amazing! I am super excited about using Kiva. I donated to help 5 Filipino women build sanitary toilets in their homes. Kiva has a 96% repayment rate, so when these women repay their loans I can loan the $$ again!! Some users have loaned the same $$ 11 or 12 times. WOW.-
Laura Gardner 4/25/2021 12:01 PMAs for the question above...um, maybe bc women are so much more family oriented than men? Pretty messed up, but true.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Laura Gardner 4/10/2021 1:55 PMI am determined to be a successful gardener this year! Planted lettuce and spinach and started a container of tomato seeds. Also planted flowers in hanging pots and pots on the porch. Such a beautiful spring day! -
Laura Gardner 4/10/2021 5:01 AMJust read this horrifying article about plastic and our broken recycling system. I knew that less than 10% of plastic was actually recycled, but I didn't fully understand why. Now I get it. It's much cheaper to make new plastic. The article ends with this horrible sentence: "Analysts now expect plastic production to triple by 2050." https://www.npr.org/2020/09/11/897692090/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Laura Gardner 4/10/2021 4:52 AMMy mom actually uses geothermal energy! Fascinating option. I especially liked reading about ways it can be shared in a community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
