Great job everybody! This was our highest-scoring day yet!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Accelerating Solutions Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 6:37 PM
Wearing a jacket during the winter to reduce heating always helps because heating and cooling use so much energy. It also helps to unplug things and turn off lights.

I hope everyone learned some new things and was able to start some practices that they can implement in their daily lives all of the time.

I'm so happy that we've got 70 people on the high meadow team! Being a team captain has been a great experience and I look forward to joining as an alum next year.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Choose Better Wood Products
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 4:50 PM
Forests also lead to more biodiversity which among many benefits, makes my area more resilient to natural disasters. Having enough trees also means waking up to beautiful birdsongs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 4:47 PM
I know I can always sign petitions and donate money to organizations that keep people from developing on peatlands. I can also teach people who think peatlands are ugly, just how important and cool they are so that people won't think it's okay to destroy them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 4:44 PM
I've not heard of silvopasture before and that's why I chose to learn about it. I did find that it's similar to agroforestry but used more for animals than plants. It's practical because having trees planted on farmland makes the habitat more healthy and natural, and also sequesters carbon. I think it should be explored more because it's not a widely known term.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 4:41 PM
I feel overwhelmed about how much of what happens with temperate forests that I don't have a voice in because the last thing we need is more development on natural land. I do feel hopeful when I am on preserves that keep natural land from being developed because I can see the uninterrupted beauty of nature, and feel like some people are looking out for these forests.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Contact your Elected Officials
Do you have any personal connections to a farm or farmland? If so, what are they? What feelings are evoked for you when thinking about declining farmland?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 4:37 PM
I know a few people who have sustainable farming practices and it feels really good to get food from them. I think it's sad when people can't keep up their farm anymore because it means land that was probably originally filled with trees and then used to feed the community is now left without plant life. Additionally, when this happens, the soil begins to release carbon back into the atmosphere and becomes harder and harder to grow on. It's important to restore this farmland as soon as possible, and either plant trees (a great way to sequester carbon), or crops that can feed the community with healthy ingredients. It is important when creating new farmland, to not use monoculture, and to possibly use things like silvopasture and agroforestry so that the land does not end up the way it was before.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Rhys Ellis's avatar
    Rhys Ellis 4/30/2021 4:28 PM
It can create more fertile soil in a world where a lot of soil is being degraded. Biochar can increase the sequestration of carbon into the ground which makes it a good carbon offset.
