Multiple Solutions
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

Alternative Cement
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching cement alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Electricity
Hang Laundry Outside to Dry
I will hand one load of laundry a week outside to dry instead of using the dryer.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Participate in one of the NCMNS Earth Day programs on April 22nd.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences has prepared an Earth Week event starting from April 20th to April 25th. To celebrate Earth Day, participate in 1 program on April 22nd and write a short reflection in your feed.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting with black soldier grubs
Learn about NC's native Diptera that has one of the widest digestive enzyme profiles, allowing for digestion of virtually all human food waste in one to two days: pre-and post-consumer; cooked, raw, or spoiled. Sign up for this workshop and discuss with your team members:
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 30 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 3 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Land Sinks
Support a Community Garden
Multiple Solutions
I will support a community garden by volunteering, donating, or advocating for a new or existing one.

Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Health and Education
Support Businesses Owned by Women, BIPOC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 30 minutes researching businesses owned by women, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color that I can support when shopping.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Research Heat PumpsWhy is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 3:32 PMI think it is so important to think about what we are leaving behind, and even what we want to experience in the future. Without taking action on climate change now we are dooming the future of our children and all other organisms on earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:32 PMI definitely have the hardest time "reusing" items. I tend to collect things so I can reuse them and get to a point that I become overwhelmed and throw them in the recycling bin! Still working on reducing even more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Online Energy AuditWhat are your next steps for saving energy?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:28 PMAfter we had an energy assessment from our energy company, our biggest takeaway was that we needed to better insulate in several areas. We have been working through our house to increase the insulation but the next thing on the list is our garage door that leads into the basement! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:24 PMIt is so disheartening and disgusting to read about Environmental Racism and Redlining. Although the process of Redlining was not put in place by the politicians and city planners of today, I have not seen an effort to reduce the negative effects of that policy. Allowing companies and other polluting infrastructure into these communities is a practice that needs to stop. These communities lack the resources to fight back and are feeling the effects of climate change before many others. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:40 PMWhen using smaller plates, it is easier for me to not overeat. With 2 kids under 5, sometimes I feel like I'm just shoveling food into my mouth so I can make sure I get it in, so when I can't eat mindfully, using smaller plates helps limit my intake. I can always go back for more if I need it! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:38 PMI appreciate having the knowledge to move forward with confidence in my senses and use of logic! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:37 PMI think the whole process of food production makes me feel bad for any waste. The entire process and the CO2 that is produced makes it super important to waste as little as possible. Trying to stay organized has helped with food waste, but it is definitely something I struggle with! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:35 PMI definitely notice my "full" cues earlier when I eat without distraction, which means I eat less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:32 PMI think just sitting down and staring at one place for a long time had a profound experience on my perspective. There are so many organisms that can rely on a tiny piece of nature, so I try to keep as many spaces in my yard for all of the creatures to use.
