Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Research Heat Pumps
Why is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 3:32 PM
I think it is so important to think about what we are leaving behind, and even what we want to experience in the future. Without taking action on climate change now we are dooming the future of our children and all other organisms on earth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:32 PM
I definitely have the hardest time "reusing" items. I tend to collect things so I can reuse them and get to a point that I become overwhelmed and throw them in the recycling bin! Still working on reducing even more!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:30 PM
Spending more time outside with my family!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Online Energy Audit
What are your next steps for saving energy?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:28 PM
After we had an energy assessment from our energy company, our biggest takeaway was that we needed to better insulate in several areas. We have been working through our house to increase the insulation but the next thing on the list is our garage door that leads into the basement!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings Learn about the Legacy of Redlining
How does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 2:24 PM
It is so disheartening and disgusting to read about Environmental Racism and Redlining. Although the process of Redlining was not put in place by the politicians and city planners of today, I have not seen an effort to reduce the negative effects of that policy. Allowing companies and other polluting infrastructure into these communities is a practice that needs to stop. These communities lack the resources to fight back and are feeling the effects of climate change before many others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:40 PM
When using smaller plates, it is easier for me to not overeat. With 2 kids under 5, sometimes I feel like I'm just shoveling food into my mouth so I can make sure I get it in, so when I can't eat mindfully, using smaller plates helps limit my intake. I can always go back for more if I need it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:38 PM
I appreciate having the knowledge to move forward with confidence in my senses and use of logic!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:37 PM
I think the whole process of food production makes me feel bad for any waste. The entire process and the CO2 that is produced makes it super important to waste as little as possible. Trying to stay organized has helped with food waste, but it is definitely something I struggle with!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:35 PM
I definitely notice my "full" cues earlier when I eat without distraction, which means I eat less.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Tend A Garden
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

    Miranda Dowdy's avatar
    Miranda Dowdy 4/30/2021 12:32 PM
I think just sitting down and staring at one place for a long time had a profound experience on my perspective. There are so many organisms that can rely on a tiny piece of nature, so I try to keep as many spaces in my yard for all of the creatures to use.
