What are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?

Mental distress & domestic abuse are one of the most pressing issues for women the community in my area is facing. I have done some research the charities working on women issues in the Nottinghamshire area and I found the following:

    Nottingham Women's Centre (nottinghamwomenscentre.com)

Domestic Abuse & Violence Helpline, Support, Charity in Nottingham | Juno - Juno Women's Aid Nottingham & Nottinghamshire (junowomensaid.org.uk)

Help for women in Broxtowe experiencing domestic abuse (broxtowewomensproject.org.uk)

Welcome to NMWN | NMWN (nottinghammuslimwomensnetwork.co.uk)

    And many more...

I've learnt so much through this eco-challenge.
Thanks to the sustainability BRG for getting us on board. I've had a lot of fun doing the daily actions and educating myself through the one-time actions.

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

My diet is plant-focused at the moment having a vegetarian partner. I found out trough some digging (excluding the usual culprit eg non-sustainably sourced palm oil) that our coffee consumption and our love for all things chocolate was contributing to deforestation too. I will make sure to look for rainforest alliance logo for all coffee/chocolate I purchase and look out for product using shade-grown cocoa and shade-grown coffee.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Baya D's avatar
    Baya D 4/29/2021 9:19 AM
A sustainable community is for me a self-sufficient community that can thrive without the need to take the car and drive miles and miles away to have access to basic necessities (local shops, schools, GP Practice, offices, gardens, banks,...). This could drastically improve people mental health (who has ever been happy  being stuck in traffic?), drive the economy to favor local businesses, increase productivity, reduce overall waste...

For this vision to become reality, we have to re-imagine the way we see urban planning. From car-centered cities to people-centered cities

My team is having a office clearout and because we work in healthcare this involves a lot of medicines and food supplements samples that apparently can't go to charity...how to manage this as to minimise the amount of products to go to landfill? Thanks!

How could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?

    Baya D's avatar
    Baya D 4/25/2021 8:40 AM
Walking infrastructures such as larger pavements to allow for communities to thrive. With great walking/cycling/public transport infrastructures, the need for cars is reduced which contributes to the environment. Walking is healthy and making the city more walkable can only reduce the burden on health services in the long term.
Good walking infrastructures look like larger pavements, ensuring cars don't park on them (which is so often the case in the UK), making the high streets car-free, car parks outside of the city at much cheaper rate for people visiting the city for the day,...so many possibilities
