Industry

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

DAILY ACTIONS

Industry

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Bioplastics

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and BIPOC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 2 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Deborah Clevenger 4/30/2021 5:18 PM
In our region you can look up online to see what is advised by area and what is safe to eat for adults, woman and children. I’m not a huge fan of seafood but what I do eat follows guidelines. However I am working on incorporating additional seafood choices into our dinner menus.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/30/2021 5:15 PM
We use the left over vegetable pieces when we make homemade soup or just broth. We also use the leftover parts of fruit for baking muffins. When we make mashed potatoes we use the whole potato skin and all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/30/2021 4:48 PM
I’d rather use this money on things I like to do, day trips, travel, by books, donate to charities etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/29/2021 10:51 AM
The biggest benefit of eating/serving smaller portions is being healthier overall. Portion control helps you digest your food easier, can help with maintaining weight, and can help with maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/29/2021 10:47 AM
I already incorporate the R’s in our lifestyle as much as possible, but I also believe that their are still ways to continue doing so that I may not be doing 100%. It makes me feel good as a person and also as a family they we do what we can to help.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/29/2021 10:45 AM
From what I’ve read typically the richer the communities are the more meat people eat in those places.
The climate impact of meat can accelerate global warming. The impact on people could be increased risk of cancer and other diseases such as obesity, diabetes etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/29/2021 10:33 AM
Our household could use reusable bags not just for groceries, we could choose our purchases wisely and always make sure to recycle everytime you can. Also we could avoid single use containers, utensils etc.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/28/2021 5:03 PM
When I am mindful about my eating I eat better. I am more conscious of what I’m
Eating, how good it is for me and I choose foods that are better for my overall health
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/27/2021 5:54 PM
While I don’t necessarily use plastic bags regularly, I do sometimes. I could use reusable plastic bags. Cotten bags. Composite bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Climate Resilience Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Deborah Clevenger's avatar
    Deborah Clevenger 4/23/2021 2:58 PM
Until this Challenge I had never heard of silvopasture. Now I understand a little bit more of what it means. I would say that one of the biggest advantage would be the shade and shelter for livestock from the trees.
