REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Climate Resilience Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Steven Clemens 4/15/2021 1:25 PMIt seems like a no-brainer to improve cities by making them greener and safe from climate changes. But the impact of those changes needs to be determined. If you take away low income housing to put green spaces which then drive up the cost of the surrounding housing you are pushing people out of their homes and potentially gentrifying the neighborhood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Steven Clemens 4/15/2021 1:23 PMI hadn't thought about the impact of Red Lining on the climate of the city. The idea that the red lined areas are 5 degrees hotter on average is fascinating. It comes down to more concrete and less trees and green space in those areas. But by reading about the gentrification of greening cities, it's not so easy a problem to solve. The more trees and green space, the more desirable the neighborhood that drives up costs and changes the make up of the neighborhood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate My Carbon FootprintWhat stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?
Steven Clemens 4/15/2021 1:19 PMTrying to reduce my carbon foot print has always been a problem as air travel is a big one for me. Past years it has been 100,000 miles per year. With the pandemic it has dropped to zero for the first time since high school. I don't think it'll stay at zero but I will definitely work to keep it lower than before.
