Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

My diet choices fall under the MA advisory. Though it was interesting how varied the different regions all are!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Aside from environmental benefits, we will see both health and monetary benefits from eating smaller portions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Dan Catalano's avatar
    Dan Catalano 4/06/2021 2:03 PM
People may tend to throw food away after the use by, sell by , or most commonly, the best by date. Knowing the differences and specifics allow us to waste less food. If the sell by date is reached, that doesn't have an impact on whether your food is safe to eat or not.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Dan Catalano's avatar
    Dan Catalano 4/06/2021 1:49 PM
I would imagine that meat is comparably more expensive globally than other food options. Richer countries can afford meat but eat it at the same cadence as other countries would eat vegetables. As meat is more caloric than vegetables, this can cause richer countries to be more overweight on average. And as meat is energy-intensive to produce in mass quantities, it pollutes the planet.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?

I would much rather spend that money on some new camping gear!
