REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. How would you rather use this money?
Dionne Carloni 4/30/2021 6:35 PMI started with a clean fridge when I started the month after getting back from a trip, so very little actual food waste but a total of 10.5 lbs that went out to compost (peels, skins, etc). The last time I did this assessment I joined Block Bins as a composting service, so it feels better to put my money towards that service to reroute produce scraps. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Dionne Carloni 4/30/2021 2:12 PMI am going to be eating meat much more mindfully now. I hadn't taken into account the impacts to the environment as well as potentially on my health. Now that I've tried alternate options it's not nearly as difficult as I thought it was and I am confident I can make a reduction in how much I consume. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Dionne Carloni 4/30/2021 11:20 AMTraditional gendered realities likely reduce the number of women pursing representative roles in communities as well as the continued wealth gap considering the cost to maintain a political career. -
Dionne Carloni 4/30/2021 5:30 AMWOO-HOO you did it... last day of the Eco-Challenge! Please consider sharing any parting thoughts on what this challenge meant to you. EcoChallenge is run out of OR so I believe you'll have until 2am tonight to get any late-night last-minute actions or reflection questions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Dionne Carloni 4/28/2021 5:21 PMLearning more about this, I think it's hard to say how my diet is impacted because the ingredients causing the issue are not readily apparent. I did learn more about what Sustainable Palm Oil means through this video and will be keeping an eye out for that now: https://youtu.be/7BRGj0DwYwA -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Dionne Carloni 4/28/2021 4:56 PMDuring non-Covid times I would bike a lot because it would be faster than battling traffic in the city most of the time, but with less traffic it's actually been quite pleasant. It's been fun and energizing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Dionne Carloni 4/28/2021 4:48 PMTaking a daily walk has been a great way to get to know and feel connected to the neighborhood. It's also just nice to take a break and refocus. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Dionne Carloni 4/28/2021 4:32 PMI have started being more aware about how making purchases will have a long term impact, to the point that I have been making a lot less purchases - which also has been quite liberating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Dionne Carloni 4/27/2021 8:47 PMEating mindfully was a way bigger challenge than I anticipated. I never realized how much I use that time for other things so I struggled not doing them. I did feel like I tasted the food more and drank more water with my meals which I intend to make more of a habit of. -
Dionne Carloni 4/27/2021 8:41 PMThe EcoChallenge ends EOD Friday... what a great time to reflect!! Make sure to answer you reflection questions to collect your thoughts on your daily and one time actions.
